Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said his government had resolved its outstanding issues with Moscow and would sign a range of economic deals with Russia on Monday in order to salvage economic relations with its neighbor.
That follows a dramatic volte face by Ukraine last month, when it ditched a proposed economic accession agreement with the European Union.
“We understood that signing this agreement [with the EU] would mean bankrupting us,” he told a pro-government, anti-EU demonstration in Kiev Saturday.
“We need to restore trade with the Russian Federation. And, at last, after long talks we have agreed on the removal of all disagreements with Russia. On Monday, we will complete these talks and…we will sign a range of agreements that will give our businesses work,” he said.
“When we took the decision to suspend association, we were thinking about you,” he told the demonstrators.
Azarov said the EU had insisted on unacceptable conditions to strike a deal with Brussels, including the introduction of gay marriage and laws protecting sexual minorities.
"The opposition leaders are telling fables when they say that we only have to sign the [association] agreement [with the EU] to start traveling to Europe visa-free the next day. Nothing of the sort. We have yet to comply with a whole set of preconditions: we have to legalize same-sex marriages, we have to adopt legislation on equality of sexual minorities, and so on. Is our society ready for this? " Azarov said.
A local news report, citing the minutes of a government meeting, said the Ukrainian cabinet instructed the nation’s Economic Development Ministry last week to draw up a roadmap for Ukraine to join the Russian-led Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.
That roadmap should be ready for a meeting of the Ukrainian-Russian intergovernmental commission due to take place next Tuesday, internet news site zn.ua reported, citing the minutes.
The significance and nature of the forthcoming deals with Russia was unclear Saturday. The Ukrainian government said just last week that it would return to association talks with the EU in the spring.
“We want to achieve stronger positions for Ukraine in talks with the EU and talks with Russia. Only then will they respect us,” Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said on Saturday following a meeting with President Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev.
President Yanukovych, meanwhile, instructed Azarov on Saturday to make sure that society and in particular students, was informed about the government’s aims and “issues surrounding Ukraine’s European integration and the course of negotiations with the EU.”
Police in the Ukrainian capital Kiev were standing by on Saturday as rival groups of pro- and anti-European demonstrators prepared rallies for the weekend.
An anti-EU integration protest in support of President Yanukovych is underway Saturday on the city’s Independence Square, at which up to 200,000 will attend, its organizers claim.
Riot police units cleared barricades erected by protesters around the government buildings in the center of the city last week, but large numbers of protesters remain camped in the area.

ReplyDeleteLes Etats-Unis traitent l'Ukraine comme une demi-colonie, a déclaré samedi le président du comité international de la Douma (chambre basse du parlement russe) Alexeï Pouchkov, sur son Twitter.
"Le département d'Etat américain exige que le président ukrainien Viktor Ianoukovitch autorise la tenue de manifestations le week-end. Il s'agit d'un diktat. On traite l'Ukraine comme une demi-colonie. Si M.Ianoukovitch signe un document à ce sujet, l'Ukraine deviendra une colonie", a indiqué M.Pouchkov.
Selon la porte-parole adjointe du département d'Etat Marie Harf, les Etats-Unis exigent que le gouvernement ukrainien autorise la tenue de manifestations ce week-end. Les Etats-Unis sont déçus par l'absence d'entente entre le gouvernement et l'opposition ukrainiens, d'après Mme Harf.
D'importantes manifestations des partisans du rapprochement avec l'Union européenne se tiennent en Ukraine depuis fin novembre suite à la décision du gouvernement de suspendre les négociations portant sur la conclusion d'un accord d'association avec l'UE. Les manifestants réclament la démission du gouvernement et l'organisation des élections présidentielle et législatives anticipées.
Fin novembre, les forces de l'ordre ont réprimé dans la violence des manifestations antigouvernementales à Kiev. Selon la porte-parole du département d'Etat américain Jennifer Psaki, les Etats-Unis étudient toutes les possibilités, y compris les sanctions, contre l'Ukraine.

„Hysterie, Realitätsverlust“: EU bangt um „Gratis-Nachschlag“ aus Ukraine – Lawrow....
ReplyDeleteRusslands Außenminister Sergej Lawrow hat in einem TV-Interview nicht an Kritik an der EU gespart: Die „an Hysterie grenzende“ Reaktion des Westens auf die Absage des Assoziierungsabkommens zeige, dass die krisengeschüttelte EU vor allem am „billigen Zubrot“ aus Kiew interessiert sei.
„Unsere EU-Partner sind in erster Linie besorgt, weil ihnen ein äußerst preisgünstiger – um nicht zu sagen kostenloser – Gewinn-Nachschlag entgeht, und das in Krisenzeiten“, sagte Lawrow im Interview mit dem TV-Sender Rossiya-24.
Die „beinahe hysterische Reaktion“ der EU auf eine „souveräne Entscheidung der legitimen Regierung der Ukraine“ stoße in Moskau auf Unverständnis, so Lawrow weiter: „Was hat die Regierung von Viktor Janukowitsch getan? Sind sie aus dem Atomwaffensperrvertrag ausgetreten? Oder haben sie angekündigt, entgegen ihren Verpflichtungen eine Atombombe bauen zu wollen? Haben sie jemanden erschießen lassen?“
Russlands Präsident Wladimir Putin habe sich schon mehrmals zur „von langer Hand geplanten“ Situation in der Ukraine geäußert, betonte der Minister.
„Dass unsere westlichen Partner offenbar den Realitätssinn verloren haben, finde ich sehr bedauerlich. Stellen Sie sich vor, ich würde mitten in den Ereignissen nach Deutschland fahren, wenn dort eine neue EU-Skeptiker-Partei binnen weniger Monate mit Losungen wie ‘Raus aus der EU’ großen Zuspruch erlangt hätte. Wenn ich mich dort unter die Demonstranten mischen würde, die ein Umdenken der Beziehungen Deutschlands mit der EU, einen Austritt fordern, würde eine Resolution (von Nato, Europarat und OSZE, Red.) folgen, wie unerhört es sei, dass Russland sich in die inneren Angelegenheiten Deutschlands einmischt“, sagte Lawrow.
Ein „ernsthaftes“ Gespräch zu diesem Thema stehe „unbedingt“ an, so der russische Außenminister – es bleibe zu hoffen, dass die EU sich davor nicht „ drücken“ werde.
Die von Russlands stets „ruhig“ vorgebrachte Idee eines gemeinsamen humanitären Raumes und einer Wirtschaftszone von Lissabon bis Wladiwostok sei nun, vor dem Hintergrund der Versuche der EU, „den sogenannten Ostpartnerschaftsländern seine Position aufzudrängen“, aktueller denn je.
Die EU-Ostpartner, so Lawrow, seien der Konkurrenz mit den europäischen Waren nicht gewachsen. Dennoch versuche man sie in die Freihandelszone zu drängen, um an Märkte zu kommen, die sofort von den konkurrenzfähigeren Produkten aus Europa geschwemmt werden. Dadurch, so der russische Außenminister, „stirbt die analoge Produktion in den Ländern, die Assoziierungsabkommen unterzeichnen“, und es entstehen Probleme für Russland, da es mit diesen Staaten für Moskau ebenfalls keine Handelsschranken gebe. „Hier liegt der Hund begraben“, sagte der russische Chefdiplomat.
