BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has suffered a pelvis injury during a skiing holiday in Switzerland, putting her on the sidelines for the next three weeks. Ms Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said today (Jan 6) that the chancellor suffered what she first thought was just a bruise to her left rear pelvic area while cross-country skiing.
Doctors told her last Friday that the injury was in fact an “incomplete” bone fracture that will require her to rest for three weeks.
Mr Seibert told reporters that Ms Merkel would need to cancel a number of official appointments in the coming weeks but would continue to lead the government and hold Cabinet meetings.
He says Ms Merkel’s fall occurred “at low speeds” but was unable to say if another person was involved. AP

ReplyDeleteGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel broke her pelvis in a skiing accident in Switzerland and has cancelled meetings for the next three weeks, her spokesman announced on Monday. Merkel, 59, will work mainly from home during her recuperation.
Spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters that Merkel had suffered a fractured pelvis while cross-country skiing, "which makes it necessary for her to lie down a lot for three weeks".
Merkel, 59, cancelled a planned trip to Warsaw on Wednesday as well as a visit to Berlin by Luxembourg's new prime minister that had been scheduled for Thursday.
"It goes without saying that as chancellor, she is capable of acting as well as communicating fully," Seibert said, adding that she would lead Wednesday's cabinet meeting, the first of 2014 for her new "grand coalition" government.
Merkel was cross-country skiing over the Christmas holidays in the southeastern Swiss region of Engadin, home of top ski resorts such as St Moritz, when the accident occurred.
The injury was initially thought to be just painful bruising but doctors diagnosed a fracture in the pelvic area Friday upon her return to Berlin, Seibert said.
