Syria says will leave if no "serious sessions" at Geneva. -U.N. confirms that Brahimi to hold separate talks with Syrians (video UN)

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem was quoted by state television on Friday as telling international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi that if no serious work sessions were held by Saturday, the government delegation would leave.

Brahimi and a Syrian government delegation met on Friday at the United Nations in Geneva, a witness said, and the mediator is due to meet the Syrian opposition delegation later on Friday. State television said the meeting was characterised by a "positive atmosphere."

"If no serious work sessions are held by (Saturday), the official Syrian delegation will leave Geneva due to the other side's lack of seriousness or preparedness," state television quoted Moualem as saying, citing a United Nations source.

  2. Moallem to Brahimi: Int’l Community Must Bless What Syrians Agree upon....

Syria Foreign Minister Walid Moallem told UN-AL envoy Lakhdar Brahimi that the international community must bless what the Syrians agree upon, not impose on them foreign agendas.

Syria’s official delegation, headed by al-Moallem held a meeting on Friday with the UN envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Geneva.

Sources close to Syria’s official delegation said that al-Moallem informed Brahimi that the delegation is serious and ready to start seriously, but this doesn’t seem on the other delegation.

Sources close to the UN were quoted as saying that Brahimi described today’s meeting as “a half step which will be a complete step tomorrow.”

The sources added that al-Moallem also informed Brahimi that the international community has to bless what the Syrians agree upon, not what would be imposed from outside.

Other sources close to UN mentioned that al-Moallem told Brahimi that if serious work sessions didn’t start tomorrow, Syria’s official delegation would leave because the other side is not serious or ready, considering that “the Syrian stance is an attempt to pressure the others to be serious.”

In the same context, sources close to Brahimi said that the latter is searching for a common ground to be based on.

  3. Assad to Stay in Power Until Elections – Minister...

GENEVA, January 24 (RIA Novosti) – Syrian President Bashar Assad will stay in power until his country is ready to vote in democratic elections, a Syrian minister who is taking part in talks with opposition forces said Friday.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said that if Assad were to leave office early, it would not solve the country’s problems.

“The president of Syria will stay in power until democratic elections in which everyone can take part are held. However, before organizing them, we will have to defeat terrorism in the country and stop the killing of civilians,” he said.

According to the minister, the government has three main priorities.

“Firstly, we need to exterminate real terrorists in the country, secondly – to help the Syrian people and to have sanctions lifted. And, thirdly, we need to hold democratic and free elections,” al-Zoubi said.

  4. Syria foes 'to meet face-to-face' at Geneva II talks...

Syria's opposition and government will meet "in the same room" in Geneva on Saturday after the first day of a peace conference ended with no direct talks.

UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who held talks with both sides on Friday, said they all understood that the conference was trying to "save Syria".

The two sides have blamed each other for a lack of progress.

Diplomats say they are now aiming at small concessions such as local truces rather than an overall peace deal.

Mr Brahimi has spent three days attempting to get the two sides to meet each other.

On Friday, the government's delegation reportedly threatened to quit the talks unless "serious" discussions were scheduled for Saturday.............http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-25887177

  5. Syria sides to meet but peace talks may not take off...

(Reuters) - After a day's delay and repeated bitter recriminations, the warring sides in Syria will hold their first joint meeting on Saturday to launch talks aimed at ending almost three years of conflict.

In a measure of the task ahead, diplomatic sources said the first two days of talks in Geneva would involve discussing a deal to allow aid into a single city, Homs, where people are starving.

The peace conference almost collapsed on Friday, the day face-to-face talks were meant to start, and was only put back on track after United Nations mediator Lakhdar Brahimi persuaded the two sides to focus on smaller issues on which there might be agreement.

"We do expect some bumps on the road," Brahimi told a news conference after separate meetings with the two delegations.

With international divisions over how to end the conflict putting an overall political solution out of reach for now, the two sides will focus on small, confidence-building steps with no certainty negotiations will even last the week.

"Both parties will be here tomorrow...they will not leave on Saturday or Sunday," Brahimi said..............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/25/us-syria-crisis-idUSBREA0N0L520140125?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

Syrian delegation in Geneva reach agreement on principles of Geneva I and will sign up to the resolution, the opposition said Friday.

    GENEVA

The Syrian opposition said Friday that a delegation representing Syrian President Bashar Assad's government in Geneva for a peace summit will sign up to Geneva I on Saturday.

A Syrian National Coalition (SNC) source said that the United Nations Arab League Envoy Lahkdar Ibrahimi will meet the two Syrian sides, hold a joint press conference and the Syrian government will sign an agreement on the principles of the resolution.

The source did not wish to be named on grounds of confidentiality.

Brahimi, after meeting with both sides, had said in a press conference Friday that both the Syrian government and the opposition SNC had accepted and "understood very well" the principles.
