Venezuelan president announces expulsion of three US diplomats

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced late Sunday he will expel three unnamed US consular officials, accusing them of meeting with university students organizing anti-government protests.

Venezuela has been rattled by unprecedented protests by students and the opposition against Maduro's government and marred by violence that peaked Wednesday, when three people were killed and dozens injured.

  • Venezuela accuses US of promoting destabilization

Venezuela accused the United States on Sunday of backing anti-government protesters who have marched against the leftist leader for two weeks and show no signs of backing down.

Protests against the government showed no sign of abating, as the fugitive opposition leader whom President Nicolas Maduro blames for sowing unrest broke his silence to urge another demonstration.

The oil-rich country's deep-rooted problems of rising prices and basic goods shortages have sparked a wave of street rallies spearheaded by students who fear a future without jobs.

The demonstrations have developed into the biggest challenge to the country's socialist rulers since the death of its longtime leader Hugo Chavez from cancer last year.

Accusing Washington of meddling to help sow the unrest, Maduro said he has ordered the expulsion of three US consular officials, whom he did not name.

"Go and do your (coup) plotting in Washington!" the president roared in a televised address, charging that the US diplomats had met with students involved in anti-government protests.

A foreign ministry statement said Maduro's government "flatly rejects remarks by US Secretary of State John Kerry, insofar as they represent yet another maneuver by the government in Washington to promote and legitimatize attempts to destabilize the Venezuelan democracy unleashed by violent groups in recent days."

During a failed two-day coup against Maduro's predecessor in 2002, the United States voiced support for a non-elected interim leader and not the elected president at the time, staunch US critic Chavez.

That move has deeply undermined Washington's credibility in Latin America to this day.

Kerry had voiced alarm Saturday at the "senseless violence" that has broken out during protests in Venezuela and heavily criticized the detention of anti-government demonstrators.

With supporters and opponents of Maduro's leftist government staging rival rallies in Caracas, following protests over soaring inflation and basic goods shortages, Kerry said he was deeply concerned, particularly at an arrest warrant being issued for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez.

  2. Venezuelan protest leader calls new rally.....Leopoldo Lopez, wanted by police, releases video as Maduro expels three US consular officials.....

A Venezuelan opposition leader who has spearheaded days of protests against the government has released a new video, calling for a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday.

Leopoldo Lopez's pledge to surrender after staging one more demonstration came after hundreds of people gathered peacefully in the capital, Caracas, for a fifth day of protests against rising inflation, food shortages and rising crime.

The protesters said on Sunday they would stay in the streets until President Nicolas Maduro disarmed pro-government militias, AFP news agency reported.

For his part, Maduro said he was ordering the expulsion of three US consular officials.

He did not identify the officials but accused them in a televised speech on Sunday night of infiltrating Venezuelan universities under the cover of doing consular work involving student visas.

There was no immediate reaction from the US government, which has denied the accusations that it is plotting with the opposition against him. The US has not had an ambassador in Caracas since 2010...................http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2014/02/venezuelan-protest-leader-calls-new-rally-2014216224829786332.html

  3. Reports Regarding Expulsion of U.S. Officials in Venezuela. -Press Statement/Jen Psaki...

Regarding recent reports involving the expulsion of U.S. officials in Venezuela, the United States has not received any formal notification.

The allegations that the United States is helping to organize protestors in Venezuela is baseless and false. We support human rights and fundamental freedoms – including freedom of expression and of peaceful assembly – in Venezuela as we do in countries around the world. But as we have long said, Venezuela’s political future is for the Venezuelan people to decide. We urge their government to engage all parties in meaningful dialogue.

  4. Venezuela: USA weisen Verwicklung in Unruhen zurück....
