Bad weather halts air and sea search for MH370. - Australia

The air and sea search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that crashed in the Indian Ocean was suspended Tuesday due to gale force winds, rain and big waves, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. The decision follows an announcement from Malaysian authorities late Monday confirming the missing airliner crashed, extinguishing the hopes of relatives of the 239 people on board but shedding no light on why it veered so far off course.

"Therefore, AMSA has suspended all sea and air search operations for today due to these weather conditions."

Strong gale force winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour (50 miles per hour) were whipping the area along with heavy rain and low cloud with a ceiling between 200 feet (60 metres) and 500 feet, a statement said.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said a new analysis of satellite data on the flight's path placed its last position in remote waters off Australia's west coast, far from any possible landing sites.

Hopes had been high that wreckage would be found Tuesday after two new objects - a green circular item and an orange rectangular one - were spotted on Monday by an Australian military plane.

This followed larger "white and square" objects seen by a Chinese Ilyushin IL-76 reconnaissance plane, which came after satellite images and data captured by Australia, China and France in recent days showed indistinct items in the southern Indian Ocean.

Ten aircraft from Australia, US, New Zealand, China and Japan have been scouring the vast and wild ocean looking for the Boeing 777, along with Australian ship HMAS Success, which has a crane capable of retrieving any wreckage.

AMSA said the Success had been forced to leave the search area early Tuesday until seas abate with swells of up to four metres....... http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_03_25/Bad-weather-halts-air-and-sea-search-for-MH370-AMSA-1256/

  • U.S. sends black box locator, underwater vehicle to Australia
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Monday the U.S. has sent a towed pinger locator, an autonomous underwater vehicle and trained personnel to Australia in case the equipment is needed to search for the black box of the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner.

A towed pinger locator and a Bluefin-21 autonomous underwater vehicle were flown out of JFK Airport in New York to Perth, Australia earlier the day, and expected to arrive there on Tuesday, Kirby confirmed at the Pentagon press briefing.

"There will be a small number of people going along with them," he added. "I think there are two on the flight with the gear itself, and then another eight folks will be flying separately to Perth to prepare the equipment."

The towed pinger locator could be used to locate the missing airliner's black box, while the Bluefin-21 autonomous underwater vehicle has sophisticated sonars that could be used to locate wreckage, he said.

The underwater unmanned vehicle can dive to 14,700 feet, and if needed, the vehicle will operate off an Australian commercial ship, he said.
However, Kirby stressed that the equipment is being sent to Perth just in case "there be a need."........http://english.cntv.cn/2014/03/25/ARTI1395709514551837.shtml

  1. Missing Malaysia Plane: Race is on to find black boxes before batteries die

CANBERRA, Australia -- Time is running out to find the crucial keys that could solve the mystery of how and why Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down.

After the excruciating 17-day wait for confirmation that the Boeing 777 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, searchers are racing to locate the so-called black boxes before a battery-powered ping they emit fades away.

By law, the boxes with must be able to send those signals for at least 30 days following a crash. But experts say they can continue making noise for another 15 days or so beyond that, depending upon the strength of the black box battery at the time of the crash.......http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/missing-malaysia-plane-race-is-on-to-find-black-boxes-before-batteries-die-1.1744023#ixzz2wxMI1FB6

  2. Suche wegen Unwetter unterbrochen...
