- Christian Ehler (ΕΛΚ, Γερμανία)

Τι σημαίνει η κρίση στην Ουκρανία για τις σχέσεις ΕΕ και ΗΠΑ; Πώς θα μπορούσαν οι δυο πλευρές να συνεργαστούν για να αντιμετωπίσουν κάτι που μοιάζει με ρωσική πρόκληση ψυχροπολεμικού χαρακτήρα;

 Οι ΗΠΑ για πολύ καιρό προσπαθούσαν να τοποθετήσουν την Ασία στο επίκεντρο της εξωτερικής πολιτικής. Τι σημαίνει αυτό για την Ευρώπη;

Δεν είναι μόνο οι ΗΠΑ  αλλά και η ΕΕ προσβλέπει στην Ασία, όσο γίνεται οικονομικά και πολιτικά σημαντική. Αλλά αν κάτι πάει στραβά οι ΗΠΑ δεν έχουν σύμμαχο εκεί  που να συγκρίνεται με εμάς. Πρέπει να θυμόμαστε ότι δεν είναι νηπιαγωγείο, δεν είναι μία αντιπαλότητα μεταξύ παιδιών. Πηγαίνει πίσω, στην ουσία του ζητήματος - ποιός μπορεί να είναι πραγματικός, δυνατός σύμμαχος;

Τι περιμένετε από τη σύνοδο αυτής της εβδομάδας; Η εμπορική συμφωνία βρίσκεται ακόμα στο τραπέζι;

  1. EU and US consider 'deeper sanctions' against Russia...

    The US and EU are discussing "deeper sanctions" against Russia if there are "further incursions into Ukraine".US President Barack Obama said "energy is obviously a central focus of our efforts", acknowledging it "will have some impact on the global economy".

    He was speaking after talks in Brussels with EU leaders Jose Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy.

    At a news conference the three men spoke of the special relationship between the transatlantic partners.

    Mr Obama said: "The world is safer and more just when Europe and America stand as one". Mr Van Rompuy, European Council president, called it a "crucial" relationship.

    Their talks at the headquarters of the 28-nation EU bloc also covered plans to finalise a transatlantic trade partnership, as well as efforts to tackle Iran's nuclear programme and Syria's chemical weapons.
    High tensions

    Mr Obama praised the EU for the steps it had already taken - along with the US - to penalise Russia. These have included visa bans and asset freezes against a number of Russian officials.

    He said those actions were taken after Russian forces moved in to annex Crimea, and they now must consider "the potential for additional, deeper sanctions" should Moscow attempt to do the same in other parts of Ukraine.

    "We recognise that in order for Russia to feel the impact of these sanctions, it will have some impact on the global economy as well as on all the countries represented here today," Mr Obama said.

    Acknowledging that some EU countries are more dependent than others on Russia for energy, he said "this entire event has pointed to the need for Europe to look at how it can further diversify its energy sources". .........http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26746106

  2. EU-US Summit: Joint Statement. -The White House...

    We, the leaders of the European Union and the United States, met today in Brussels to reaffirm our strong partnership. We reaffirmed our shared values of democracy, individual freedom, the rule of law and human rights, and a common commitment to open societies and economies. Starting from those values, the European Union and the United States work together every day to address issues of vital interest and importance to our citizens and the world. We strive to create jobs and sustainable growth through sound economic policies. We seek a landmark Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership to build our common prosperity. We undertake joint efforts to build security and stability around the globe and to tackle pressing global challenges like climate change. Today, we took stock of our achievements, set priorities and charted the way ahead for a stronger transatlantic relationship, and rededicated ourselves to building a safer, more prosperous world for future generations.
    Today in Ukraine, the basic principles of international law and security in the 21st century are being challenged. The EU and the United States support the Ukrainian people and their right to choose their own future and remain committed to uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We strongly condemn the illegal annexation of Crimea to Russia and will not recognise it. We urge Russia to engage in a meaningful dialogue with Ukraine with a view to finding a political solution. Further steps by Russia to destabilise the situation in Ukraine would lead to additional and far reaching consequences for the EU's and United States' relations with Russia in a broad range of economic areas. The EU and the United States stand by the Ukrainian government in its efforts to stabilise Ukraine and undertake reforms, including through assistance. We welcome the Ukrainian government's commitment to ensure that governmental structures are inclusive and reflect regional diversity and to provide full protection of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities.
    Reinforcing economic growth and job creation remains central. The EU and the United States have taken important steps to stabilize financial conditions and overcome the crisis. The EU remains committed to building a deep and genuine economic and monetary union, including a banking union on which significant progress has already been made. Determined action by the EU and the United States is vital to support the recovery in the short run and to promote sustainable and balanced growth, to boost competiveness and to reduce unemployment, especially of young people.
    We commit to continue our efforts through the G-20 to promote strong, sustainable and balanced growth across the global economy by developing comprehensive growth strategies for the Brisbane Summit. We aim at implementing the G-20 commitments to create a more stable financial system. Fiscal sustainability in advanced economies remains critical for a stronger and sustainable recovery. We also welcome the ambitious G-20 agenda to fight tax evasion..............http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/03/26/eu-us-summit-joint-statement

  4. Obama tells EU to do more to cut reliance on Russian gas...

    (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama told the European Union on Wednesday it cannot rely on the United States alone to reduce its dependency on Russian energy, as relations with Moscow chill over its seizure of Crimea from Ukraine.

    Speaking on a visit to Brussels to discuss trade relations and the Ukraine crisis, Obama said concluding a new transatlantic trade pact, now under negotiation, would make it easier for Washington to license more gas exports.

    The EU relies on Russia for about a third of its oil and gas, and tensions with Moscow have heightened concerns among its 28 members about the security of their energy supplies. Some 40 percent of that gas is shipped through Ukraine.............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/26/us-usa-eu-summit-idUSBREA2P0W220140326?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

...........http://www.elmundo.es/internacional/2014/03/26/5332f7c3268e3edc3b8b4576.html

  6. Remarks by President Obama and NATO Secretary General Rasmussen Before Meeting. - The White House...

    PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, let me just say how much I appreciate the opportunity once again to meet with Secretary General Rasmussen. I have to say that in the entire time that he has served in this position he has done an outstanding job. His leadership, his vision, his clarity, and his political skills -- because there are a lot of NATO members -- have all been on display, and as a consequence, the Transatlantic Alliance is stronger, more robust than it was without him. And so we’re very grateful for his extraordinary work.

    At a time when the situation in Ukraine I think has focused everyone’s attention on the importance of the transatlantic relationships, we spent most of our discussion reaffirming the importance of NATO, that it is the bedrock of America’s security as well as European security. We share the view that Russia’s illegal incursion into Ukraine and the violations of territorial integrity and sovereignty have to be condemned, but it also reminds us that the NATO commitments that we’ve made under Article 5 are something that are not just items on a piece of paper, but are critically important to all NATO members. And we have to have the resources and preparation to make sure that every member of NATO feels confident in Article 5’s effect.

    We’ve already made a series of decisions to help underscore the importance of NATO and collective defense in the wake of what has happened in Ukraine. There will be a ministerial summit coming up at which I have asked the United States delegation to work cooperatively with the Secretary General’s office and evaluate all the additional steps that we might take in order to bolster that confidence among all NATO members.

    And we also talked about a project that the Secretary General has been working on for quite some time to continue to develop the joint capabilities of NATO. And I think that at this moment, as I said at the press conference earlier today, both the United States and Europe are going to have to make sure that we are stepping up our game and making the contributions that are required in order for us to give full effect to our NATO obligations...............http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/03/26/remarks-president-obama-and-nato-secretary-general-rasmussen-meeting
