Lavrov: Kiev crudely violating Geneva deal. - US Vice President Biden arrives in Ukraine

The Russian foreign minister has said that a deadly gun battle in east Ukraine is proof that the Ukraine government is "crudely violating" a deal struck in the Swiss city of Geneva to ease tensions.
Sergey Lavrov's comments came after three pro-Russians were killed on Sunday in an exchange of fire with unknown attackers at a checkpoint set up by pro-Russians near the town of Slovyansk.
"Steps are being taken - above all by those who seized power in Kiev - not only that do not fulfil, but that crudely violate the Geneva agreement," he said in Moscow on Monday.

Lavrov said the attack showed showed the Ukraine government did not want to control "extremists".
In a statement on Sunday, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said the shooting had taken place near a roadblock, set up by a group called the People's Republic of Donetsk, close to the village of Bylbasivka.
The unknown attackers, a group of about a dozen men, left the scene taking the dead and wounded with them, the statement said.
Sunday's armed clash appears to be the first since an international agreement was reached last week in Geneva to ease tensions in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian supporters have seized government buildings in at least 10 cities.
It throws into question an already tentative truce that was supposed to be taking place over the Easter weekend..........http://www.aljazeera.com/news/europe/2014/04/lavrov-kiev-crudely-violating-geneva-deal-20144219427141197.html

  • KIEV: US Vice President Joe Biden touched down at Kiev airport on Monday for a two-day visit seen as a show of support for crisis-hit Ukraine's pro-Western leaders.
Biden's arrival came as Moscow accused Kiev of violating an international accord aimed at defusing a separatist uprising in Ukraine's pro-Russian east.

On arrival, the US vice president was taken to a briefing with US embassy staff. On Tuesday he was to meet the country's interim president, Oleksandr Turchynov, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and lawmakers.

A senior administration official told reporters travelling with Biden that the vice president would be discussing security, politics, economy and energy issues with the Ukrainian leaders.
The stress would be on maintaining Ukrainian "national unity" and calling for "urgent implementation" of an accord hammered out on Thursday in Geneva between Ukraine, Russia, the US and the EU, the official said on condition of anonymity.

That accord, which demands the disarmament of "illegal armed groups" and the end of occupation of public buildings in Ukraine, is largely stalled following the refusal of pro-Kremlin rebels to comply with it....................................http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/us-vice-president-biden/1078760.html

  1. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called on US partners to realize their responsibility for those they brought to power in Kiev before declaring their ultimatums to Moscow.....

"Before declaring us your ultimatums and demanding to do something within two or three days and otherwise threatening with sanctions, we would like to urge our American partners to fully realize their responsibility for those they have brought to power, " Lavrov said.

The US authorities are trying to protect the government in Kiev "by turning a blind eye on the violence committed by this regime and the militants that this regime relies on," he said.

The US argument that a huge quantity of Russian weapons was found in the area of clashes and conflicts in Ukraine is ridiculous: "There has never been any other weapon there, they all have Russian weapons there," the minister said. "But what was shown on television quite recently, namely the U.S. weapon discovered at the location of illegal armed formations, that is something new," the Russian foreign minister said. These weapons were held by illegal armed formations, not by the Ukrainian army forces, Lavrov said.

  2. Ukraine crisis: Biden warns of 'humiliating threats' to Kiev...

US Vice-President Joe Biden has said the US stands with Ukraine's new leaders in facing "humiliating threats".

He was speaking during a meeting in parliament in Kiev, as part of a show of support for Kiev's new pro-Western government.

He also had talks with acting President Olexander Turchynov and interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Meanwhile, funerals were due to take place for three men shot on Sunday.

The men were killed during a raid on a checkpoint manned by pro-Russian separatists near the town of Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine.

The circumstances remain unclear. The local separatists said the attack was carried out by ultra-nationalist Right Sector militants. Kiev called it a "provocation" staged by Russian special forces.
