"We find it necessary not to let the vote for stripping Russia of its powers happen. If we see the vote is imminent, Russian delegation will quit PACE before the vote," head of the International Committee of Russian Parliament's lower house, or State Duma, Alexei Pushkov, told a Duma meeting.
State Duma is discussing a statement about situation in PACE. The statement said "(PACE' s) destructive moves to deprive Russian delegation of its credentials have been based on distorted information and biased assessments of situation in Ukraine and Crimea."
Pushkov noted that Russian delegation plans to break up the "hostile discriminatory vote."
Noting that PACE is aware of the Russian intentions and "the ball is at their court now," he said the Assembly has time to decide which option is more useful for it.
- Pushkov added that Russian delegation is going to prevent Moscow's opponents to celebrate Russia's humiliation.
- On Monday, Duma's speaker Sergei Naryshkin said initiative to suspend Russia's participation in PACE work was a provocation and a strike on European democratic values and parliamentarism itself.
According to Naryshkin, the real initiators of PACE's move are the United States which "attempt to isolate European countries from dialogue with Russia."
PACE's spring session will be held in Strasbourg, France, on April 7-11. The Assembly is due to hold an urgent debate on threats to the functioning of democratic institutions in Ukraine and takes a decision on a motion to reconsider the credentials of Russian delegation over the situation in Crimea.
Russia has already paid its membership fee in PACE for 2014.
