Turkey plans to use Chinese defense system

Turkey is likely to eventually choose a Chinese air defense system although it has been under pressure from Europe and the US, the Daily Sabah reported Monday.

European and US defense companies have pressured Turkish defense companies by implying that their partnerships in some areas might end if Turkey chooses the Chinese manufacturer, said sources in the Turkish defense industry, according to the report.

In September, Turkey selected China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corporation (CPMIEC) to build its first long-range air and anti-missile defense system, instead of the US and EU bidders. CPMIEC's bidding price was $3.44 billion.

The bidding for the contract has been extended until June 30 for bidders to submit their renewed proposals, The Defensenews reported last week.

Despite all the pressure, Turkey's continuation with CPMIEC still seems the most probable option, said the daily. Defense industry experts believe the Chinese air defense system is able to compete with western rivals in technical capability and acquisition as well as operation costs, the report said.
