According to the report, the officials said “five second-hand Sukhoi attack aircraft would enter service within a few days, and that more were on their way.”
Iraq has been fighting an offensive by insurgents from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS (ISIL). The militant group has gained control of large swathes of the north and west of Iraq after a string of attacks this month.
On Saturday, the government said it had retaken the northern city of Tikrit, which on June 11 fell to the ISIS militants.
ISIS is a more radical offshoot of al-Qaeda that has its roots in Iraq and expanded into Syria shortly after the start of the three-year insurgency against President Bashar al-Assad.
The military gains by Islamic State fighters have highlighted the extent to which the conflict in Iraq is intertwined with the civil war in Syria, where more than 160,000 people have been killed in the last three years.
Iran is ready to help Iraq fight an armed revolt using the same methods it deployed against opposition forces in Syria, an Iranian general said, suggesting Tehran is offering to take a larger role in battling Sunni militias threatening Baghdad.

ReplyDeleteΤην πρώτη παρτίδα μαχητικών αεροσκαφών Sukhoi παρέλαβε το Ιράκ, σύμφωνα με επίσημη δήλωση του ιρακινού υπουργείου Εξωτερικών. Όπως αναφέρει, πέντε Su-25 έχουν ήδη παραληφθεί από τη χώρα της Μέσης Ανατολής, έπειτα από συμφωνία με τη ρωσική πλευρά, προκειμένου «να ενισχύσουν την πολεμική αεροπορία». Σύμφωνα με αξιωματικό του ιρακινού στρατού, Ρώσοι ειδικοί που έφτασαν στη χώρα θα παρέχουν την κατάλληλη τεχνική υποστήριξη.
Σημειώνεται ότι νωρίτερα την περασμένη εβδομάδα, πηγή της ρωσικής αεροπορικής βιομηχανίας είχε αναφέρει στο Interfax ότι το Ιράκ «πρόκειται να παραλάβει έναν αριθμό αεροσκαφών Su-30MKI, τα οποία χρησιμοποιήθηκαν από τις ινδικές αεροπορικές δυνάμεις και επιστράφηκαν στο Ιρκούτ μετά από πολλά χρόνια υπηρεσίας. Τα εν λόγω αεροσκάφη είχαν σταλεί σε εργοστάσιο της Λευκορωσίας για επισκευή. Έπειτα αρκετά από αυτά πουλήθηκαν στην Ανγκόλα, ενώ τα εναπομείναντα (πέντε ή έξι) ενδέχεται να σταλούν στο Ιράκ», σχολιάζοντας δήλωση του Ιρακινού προέδρου Νούρι αλ Μαλίκι ότι η χώρα του έχει ήδη συμφωνήσει να προμηθευτεί αρκετά αεροσκάφη Sukhoi από τη Ρωσία και τη Λευκορωσία.

ReplyDeleteIraq has requested Russia to urgently supply Su-25 (Frogfoot) ground attack aircraft over Washington’s delay in delivering F-16 fighters. A source from the military and diplomatic circles reported this to ARMS-TASS on Monday.
The Iraqi Defense Ministry has had to request Russian aircraft deliveries over the need to urgently raise the Iraqi army’s combat readiness in its fight against terrorists, the source said.
