Israeli military carries out airstrikes in Syria

JERUSALEM: The Israeli military carried out airstrikes on a number of military targets inside Syria, including the military headquarters, in response to a cross-border attack that left an Israeli teenager dead, authorities said.

In a statement early Monday, the military said nine targets were struck and ``direct hits were confirmed.''

"Yesterday's attack was an unprovoked act of aggression against Israel, and a direct continuation to recent attacks that occurred in the area," said Lt Col Peter Lerner, a military spokesman. He said Israel "will not tolerate any attempt to breach Israel's sovereignty and will act in order to safeguard the civilians of the state of Israel".

  • The strikes came after a civilian vehicle in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights was targeted by forces in neighboring Syria on Sunday. A 14-year-old boy was killed and two other people were wounded in the first deadly incident along the volatile area since the Syrian civil war erupted more than three years ago. Israel earlier retaliated with tank fire at Syrian government targets.
Lerner earlier said it was "the most substantial incident" along the frontier with Syria since the beginning of the civil war. He said it was unclear whether the vehicle had been struck by a rocket, mortar shell or some other explosive device, but claimed the attack was clearly intentional.

"It was fired directly from east to west," he said, adding that it was a "direct hit" on the vehicle.

The vehicle was driving along a fence that Israel has built along the Syrian frontier, Lerner said. He described the vehicle as a water tanker, and said people on board were doing work for Israel's Defense Ministry at the time. "We have a hole in the fence, which indicates it could be a projectile," Lerner said.

  • He said Israeli tanks opened fire in response at Syrian government positions, but that it remained unclear whether the Syrian military or rebels had carried out the attack. Israel has said it holds Damascus responsible for any attacks emanating from its territory.

  1. According SANA, Mikdad praised the UN’s recent report on the activities of the UN force monitoring the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria, United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), saying that Israeli air raids in Syria, notably the one in March in response to a bombing along the demilitarized zone, were proof that “pointed to direct ties with terrorist groups.”....

On March 19, Syria said that an Israeli raid on an army position killed one soldier and wounded seven others.

Israel announced that it had carried out the air raids against Syrian army positions that “aided and abetted” an attack against Israeli troops the day before, March 18, in which four soldiers who were patrolling the Israeli side of the ceasefire line with Syria were wounded by a roadside bomb, one of them severely.

Syria, which has long accused the rebels fighting to oust Assad of ties to Israel, said at the time that the Jewish state’s strikes were intended to bolster the opposition.

Early Monday morning, hours after the meeting between the Syrian deputy FM and the UN official, the Israeli Air Force launched retaliatory air strikes on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, confirming direct hits on nine army positions belonging to the Assad regime. 2.

  3. Syria: Israeli strike flagrant violation of sovereignty...

Syrian Foreign Ministry says Israeli actions are part of its policy of assisting rebels fighting the Assad regime.

The Syrian government acknowledged on Monday that Israel struck targets inside its territory overnight.

In its first official statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry claimed four were killed and nine injured in Israeli strikes.

In what it termed a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty, the Foreign Ministry stated that "Israel's new aggression comes within the context of direct and consistent support it provides terrorists in the area, following the Syrian regime's successful battle against them."

The Israel Air Force struck nine military targets, among them command centers, in response to Sunday's cross-border missile shooting, which killed an Israeli teenager and wounded his father and two other civilians in the Golan Heights.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry additionally claimed five Israeli planes, accompanied by mortar rounds and tank shells, carried out the attack.

Ten people were killed in the Israeli strike, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the British-based organization, told DPA that the strikes destroyed two tanks and seven army posts.

Earlier Monday, a Syrian opposition operative said that the Israeli strikes caused severe damage to Syrian army tanks, armored personnel carriers and a command center.
