French FM: World should impose Middle East solution / It will take $6 billion to rebuild Gaza post-war

PARIS - World powers should impose from outside a political solution to halt the conflict between Israel and Hamas that has killed hundreds in Gaza, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Monday.

Fabius issued the statement after a Palestinian official said an Israeli air strike killed 10 people and wounded about 30 on Sunday in a UN-run school in the southern Gaza Strip, and Hamas fired rockets at Israel.

"This is why we need a political solution, of which the components are known, and which I believe should be imposed by the international community, because the two parties - despite countless efforts - have unfortunately shown themselves incapable of completing talks," he said in a statement.

"Cease-fire, imposition of a two-state solution and security for Israel - there is no other way," he added.

  • It will take $6 billion to rebuild Gaza post-war, estimates suggest....

Palestinian deputy prime minister said on Monday that reconstruction in Gaza after the war, will cost at least $6 billion. "Once a ceasefire is reached, we will have to tackle the immediate problem of rehousing those who lost their homes," Mohammed Mustafa said. "According to our estimates, they may number 400,000 people."
"There is a need to build 100,000 housing units," Mustafa said, adding that a Palestinian government committee has begun assessing the damage and the $6 billion figure was only an initial estimate.

  1. Israeli FM wants Gaza under UN control...

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Monday that Israel and the Palestinian Authority should consider placing the Gaza Strip under U.N control.

"Everyone is asking, what happens after the operation ends," Lieberman was quoted as saying by the Israeli media, referring to the ongoing Israeli onslaught against the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

"There are a few options. International control of Gaza by the U.N. should certainly be considered," he said.

"It requires an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority," added Lieberman, who is also the leader of the Yisrael Beitenu Party.

He suggested the measure does not require consent from the U.N.

Lieberman asserted, meanwhile, that the Israeli military operation in Gaza is not over yet.

"No decision to end the military operation," said the Israeli foreign minister.

"We will continue destroying the tunnels and redeploy the army," he added.

Israel has been pounding the Gaza Strip – home to 1.8 million people – since July 7 with the stated aim of halting rocket fire.

At least 1823 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed and 9420 wounded in unrelenting Israeli attacks since then.

The offensive – codenamed "Operation Protective Edge," is the self-proclaimed Jewish state's third major offensive against the densely-populate coastal enclave within the last six years.
