  1. Ukraine border guards clash with rebels near Russian border: military...

KIEV - Ukrainian government forces engaged with a separatist armored column near the southeastern town of Novoazovsk, about 10 km (6 miles) from the Russian border, Ukraine's military said on Monday.

Border guards halted the advance of the column about 5 km northeast of the town, which is on the Azov Sea, it said in a Facebook post.

The new military thrust by the rebels, which a pro-government militia commander said might be aimed at capturing the government-held port city of Mariupul, appeared to open up a new southern front in the five-month conflict in Ukraine's east.

Fighting has been hithero concentrated around the two big rebel-held cities of Donetsk and Luhansk to the north.

The commander of a Ukrainian national guard unit in the area near Novoazovsk where the fighting was reported to be happening told Reuters by telephone: "A war has broken out here." He said he could not speak and ended the conversation.

Semen Semenchenko, commander of the pro-government Azov militia, said on his Facebook page that around 50 armored vehicles had crossed the border from Russia..............http://www.todayonline.com/world/ukraine-border-guards-clash-rebels-near-russian-border-military

  3. Ballistic Missile Falls on Donetsk for First Time...

DONETSK, August 25 (RIA Novosti) – A Tochka-U (SS-21 “Scarab B”) ballistic missile landed on the outskirts of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine for the first time since the conflict broke out, a RIA Novosti correspondent in the area reports.

Earlier, the use of the missiles has been reported in Luhansk, Snizhny and Shakhtarsk. The strike was carried out on August 24, Independence Day of Ukraine, but was revealed only Monday.

The rocket’s fragmentation warhead exploded in the air above a street in Donetsk’s Kirovsky district. A mother of three was seriously injured after coming to the district to check the condition of her house, as the area has frequently been subject to shelling. The missile also wounded a man who covered his children with his own body.

The missile’s engine fell on a waste area in the same district.

The basis of the Tochka-U (SS-21 “Scarab B”) tactical ballistic systems is a one-stage ballistic missile that can be guided during the whole flight. The weapon is capable of carrying nuclear, chemical and fragmentation fillings. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, several Soviet republics retained the launchers, auxiliary hardware and missiles. According to Military Periscope and Military Balance data, Ukraine has about 90 such launchers..................http://en.ria.ru/world/20140825/192329772/Ballistic-Missile-Falls-on-Donetsk-for-First-Time.html
