Russian Foreign Ministry criticizes EU commissioner for “treacherous blasphemy”

MOSCOW, August 26. /ITAR-TASS/. The Russian Foreign Ministry has described as “treacherous blasphemy” the remarks of outgoing EU commissioner Martine Reicherts who accused Russia of starting World War II.

“We would like to call attention to an irresponsible statement made by Martine Reicherts, a member of the outgoing European Commission, on August 23,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

“We regard her attempt to blame Russia, the victorious nation, for unleashing WWII in the run-up to the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of victory over fascism to be treacherous blasphemy, which eliminates the distinction between the good and evil and insults the memory of 27 million Soviet people who gave their lives to rid the world of the ‘brown plague’," the Russian Foreign Ministry said, adding the decisions of the Nuremberg Tribunal were still in force.

“Reicherts could have used her short stay in the post of a European commissioner to prove her adherence to the EU-declared basic values rather than using the Russophobic feelings, which are becoming fashionable in the politics of a number of European states, to build her own PR,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.

  • On the occasion of the European Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, Martine Reicherts, EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, commemorates those who suffered under totalitarian ideologies.
Commissioner Reicherts said:
"75 years ago today – on 23 August 1939 – two totalitarian regimes signed a non-aggression pact. This pact of Nazi Germany under Hitler and the Soviet Union under Stalin would pave the way for the most brutal war to this day, leading to many years of fear, horror and pain for the victims of these regimes.
Today is a day to remember all those who suffered under totalitarian and authoritarian rule. Today we reflect together upon the lessons learnt from this horrific chapter in European history.
The most important lesson is that remembering the past is crucial for building the future. That is what we have been doing over the past decades. As a result, the Europe we see today rests on strong values: dignity, freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.
Today is a reminder that we must not take these achievements for granted. Peace, democracy and fundamental rights are not a given. We have to defend them, every day of the year."

  1. Comment by the Information and Press Department regarding the statement by EU Commissioner for Justice Martine Reicherts on the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes....

We took note of the irresponsible statement made by member of the outgoing European Commission Martine Reichert on 23 August, in which she blamed Russia, a victor country, for unleashing World War II, on the eve of celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the defeat of fascism. We consider her statement to be an act of treacherous sacrilege that blurs the lines between good and evil and insults the memory of the 27 million Soviet people who sacrificed their lives to rid the world of the fascist plague.

The judgments made at Nuremberg have not been reversed, and yet the European Union condones neo-Nazi manifestations in Baltic countries and sympathises with fascist thugs in Ukraine.

Ms Reicherts could have used her brief tenure as EU Commissioner to demonstrate the European Union’s commitment to the core values it professes, instead of trying to make headlines by playing on the Russophobia that is becoming fashionable in the politics of some European countries.
