Russian servicemen detained in Ukraine aren't prisoners of war (spokesman)

KIEV, August 26. /ITAR-TASS/. The Russian servicemen detained in Ukraine are not prisoners of war but detainees, spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Andrei Lysenko said on Tuesday as he was answering a question about exchange of the Russians.

“All the detainees are now under the supervision of secret services,” Lysenko said.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Russian Defense Ministry source told ITAR-TASS that the Russian servicemen had accidentally crossed the Ukrainian border during a patrol mission and that they had not offered resistance during detention.

The Russian Defense Ministry underlined that Ukrainian troops had repeatedly crossed the Russian border. “Ukrainian servicemen repeatedly entered the Russian territory separately or in groups totaling more than 500, with weapons in hands and carried by armored vehicles and we didn't make much noise about it, simply returning to a safe place in the Ukrainian territory all those who so wished,” the Defense Ministry official said.

In Moscow, a military source told Russian news agencies that a group of soldiers had surrendered to Ukrainian forces after crossing the border by accident.

Ukraine rejected that explanation. "This wasn't a mistake, but a special mission they were carrying out," military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said in a televised briefing.

He also said separatists were attacking the southeastern border town of Novoazovsk "at this very minute" and Ukrainian forces had destroyed 12 armoured infantry vehicles in the area.

Twelve Ukrainian service personnel had been killed in fighting in the past 24 hours, he said, including four border guards who died when Russian Mi-24 helicopters attacked a frontier post in Luhansk region on Monday.
