UK raises terror threat level over Syria, Iraq to severe, meaning an attack is “highly likely.”

Britain’s Home Secretary Theresa May said Friday the country's terror threat was raised from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is “highly likely.”
“The increase in the threat level is related to developments in Syria and Iraq where terrorist groups are planning attacks against the West,” May said.
“Some of those plots are likely to involve foreign fighters who have travelled there from the UK and Europe to take part in those conflicts.”

“That means that a terrorist attack is highly likely, but there is no intelligence to suggest that an attack is imminent,” May said in a statement.

The threat level is now at the second highest level out of five possible categories and the highest since July 2011.

Prime Minister David Cameron was due to make a statement on the raising of the alert level at 2.45 pm (1345 GMT).

British police have appealed to the public to help identify aspiring terrorists after the murder of an American journalist focused attention on extremism in the U.K.
The involvement of a person of British nationality in James Foley's murder underscored the need to identify those who might travel abroad to fight or are at risk of being radicalized.

  1. Britain's Cameron plans new laws to tackle terrorism threat ...

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday he planned to introduce new legislation to make it harder for Britons to travel to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside Islamist extremists.

Cameron, who said he would detail his plans in parliament on Monday to confiscate passports, was speaking as Britain raised its international terrorism threat level to "severe", its second highest level.

"I will be making a statement in the House of Commons on Monday. This will include further steps to stop people travelling, with new legislation that will make it easier to take people's passports away," Cameron told a news conference.
