US judge named to UN panel on Gaza conflict looking into whether Israel has committed war crimes

The head of the United Nations' Human Rights Council announced on Monday he had appointed a US judge to join a panel set up to look into alleged war crimes during Israel's military offensive in Gaza.
Israel has already dismissed the panel as a "kangaroo court" that is biased in advance against the Jewish state.

US judge Mary McGowan Davis will join Canadian academic William Schabas and former UN racism investigator Doudou Diene of Senegal on the Commission of Inquiry created in July at the request of Palestinians backed by Arab and Muslim states.

Schabas is to chair the three-member group, to the annoyance of Israel which has pointed to the Canadian's record as a strong critic of the Jewish state and its current political leadership.

  • Ex-New York judge named to UN panel assessing war crimes in Gaza...

Mary McGowan Davis is third member of panel formed out of Palestinian resolution. She replaces attorney Amal Alamuddin....
A former New York judge has been appointed the third member of a United Nations panel looking into whether Israel has committed war crimes in its conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Mary McGowan Davis was named to the panel by the head of the UN Human Rights Council, Gabon Ambassador Baudelaire Ndong Ella, the Associated Press reported.

The council launched the commission of inquiry on July 23 accepting a Palestinian-drafted resolution.

McGowan joins William Schabas and Doudou Diène on the committee, which is expected to deliver a report next March.

The Israeli government has condemned the UN council's decision to form the panel, saying that Hamas should be the subject of the inquiry. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement at the time that Hamas was "committing a double war crime by firing rockets at Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian civilians. …"

Schabas, who chairs the panel, is a professor of international criminal law and human rights, the UN council said in an August 11 statement announcing the members............................

  1. Netanyahu welcomes Schabas' resignation from UN Gaza probe, says time to discard report ...

Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday responded to the decision by Canadian jurist William Schabas to step down from the United Nations’ investigation into the recent Gaza war by saying that the report that he was working on should also be discarded.

The Schabas commission was established by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), a body that Netanyahu said was an anti-Israel institution that has shown through its decision that there is no connection between it and human rights.

The commission has concluded collecting evidence, and is scheduled to present its conclusions to the UNHRC on March 23.

“This is the same body that only in 2014 passed more resolutions against Israel than against Iran, Syria and North Korea combined,” Netanyahu said. “Hamas, other terrorist organizations and the terror regimes around us are the ones who need to be investigated, and not Israel.”

  2. UN investigator into Gaza War crimes resigns over Israeli bias claims....

The head of UN inquiry into the hostilities between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas has pledged to resign due to Israel allegations of pro-Palestinian bias. He described the criticisms as “malicious attacks.”

William Schabas, a Canadian academic living in the UK, was appointed last August to head the UN Human Rights Council’s three-member team to probe the circumstances of the Operation Protective Edge and allegations of war crimes committed during it. Some 2,200 people, most of them Palestinian civilians, were killed in the conflict.

His candidacy however met fierce resistance from Israeli officials, who accused Schabas of being anti-Israel.

“If any other evidence of this was needed, appointing the committee’s chairman, whose biased opinions and positions against Israel are well known, proves beyond all doubt that Israel cannot expect justice and that the committee’s report has already been written,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said at the time..................http://rt.com/news/228823-gaza-war-commission-resigns/
