Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said Friday his country will be watching
closely to see what changes are implemented in Scotland after it
rejected independence.
"Attention will now turn to the changes likely to take place following the referendum, particularly in terms of devolution of powers. This process will be closely followed in Ireland," Kenny said in a statement.
In Thursday's referendum, Scottish voters rejected independence by 55.3 percent to 44.7 percent, with just four of the 32 councils voting Yes. The turnout was 84.59 percent with more than 3.6 million people going to the polls.
Kenny said Ireland is committed to deepening and strengthening the already close relationships across these islands.
"As neighbors, friends and partners across political, economic, cultural and many other spheres, relations between Ireland and Britain have never been stronger," he said.
"We look forward to working with all parties across these islands in the years ahead."
In the statement, Kenny cited the Good Friday Agreement as the "historic template" for harmonious relations between Britain and Ireland.
"The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 is the historic template for harmonious and mutually beneficial development of the totality of relationships among the peoples of these islands. In particular, it has led to a transformation in relationships between the two great traditions on this island," he said.
"Our commitment to that agreement, and to partnership, equality and mutual respect, today stands more firm than ever," he added.
The Good Friday Agreement or Belfast Agreement was a major political development in the Northern Ireland peace process of the 1990s. The agreement is made up of two inter-related documents, both agreed in Belfast on Good Friday, April 10, 1998.
