Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian MoFA regarding the statements by Chairman of the Munich Security Conference Wolfgang Ischinger

From the Official Website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (Statements and speeches):

"Recently, there have been many so-called analyses on the Ukrainian crisis of a clearly biased and provocative anti-Russian character. We regret to note that Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the Munich Security Conference, has joined the array of those who resort to double standards and contrived accusations.

The core of the statements in his recent publication in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper was that the Ukrainian crisis – which for him boils down solely to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and destabilisation of the situation in southeastern Ukraine by Russia – has opened Pandora’s box, and thus may become a sort of guideline for other countries, primarily in Asia, for solving conflicts. The arguments Mr Ischinger employs reflect the entire range of clichés aimed at us to prove that Russia is determined to further ignore the principles of securing peace and stability in Europe. Even more, he urges consideration of a “legitimate” alternative to the UN Security Council, which serves to monitor the observance of international legal standards, but, in Mr Ischinger’s opinion, is no longer capable of serving this purpose. This is beyond comprehension.

It is regretful that such “arguments” are advanced by the chairman of the Munich Security Conference, an international forum that has for many years been acknowledged as a platform for seeking understanding and compromise. Mr Ischinger, more than anyone else, should be aware of the consequences of the West’s recent unilateral actions in violation of international law: ranging from aggression against Yugoslavia without any UN Security Council resolution, to the illegal intrusion into Iraq and the bombing of the Libyan territory, to the current events in the Middle East and North Africa.

We regard the statements made by Mr Ischinger as an attempt to shift the blame for the current aggravation of international relations. This is undignified, and can undermine one’s personal prestige."
