EU Budget Commissioner Says Surprised by UK Unwilling to Pay Additional $2.6 Bln to Budget

BRUSSELS, October 27 - The European Commission is surprised by the UK Prime Minister's refusal to contribute additional 2.1 billion euro ($2.66 billion) to the EU budget, Budget Commissioner Jacek Dominik said at a Monday press briefing.

“I was surprised by [British Prime Minister David Cameron’s] reaction, because up to this moment there was no single signal from the UK administration that they have problems with this figure,” Dominik told reporters in Brussels.

The EU official also pointed at inconsistency of Cameron’s stance on contributions to the EU budget.
“You cannot question one day the system that imposes to you additional contributions due to your own data <...> and next day say that you like another element, when you get half a billion back due to the same data,” the commissioner added.

Asked whether there is a chance for the European Union to move the payment deadline for London, Dominik said the procedure would be “extremely difficult.”

Last week, UK Prime Minister Cameron broke off the EU Summit in Brussels to express his outrage with the revision of EU members' contributions to the budget, according to which Britain's contribution to the EU budget is to increase by $2.66 billion starting from December. Cameron said that the payment of an additional amount "is not going to happen".

  1. EU budget request 'may draw UK away from bloc' ...

Brussel's demand from the UK for an additional $2.6 billion contribution to the EU budget will strengthen the argument of those wanting Britain to withdraw from the bloc, financial experts have said.

A European Commission request last week for the UK to pay an extra €2.1 billion following a review of member states' growth performance sparked a political storm in the country and led to British Prime Minister David Cameron describing the demand as "completely unacceptable".

Chris Skinner, the Chairman of the London-based Financial Services Club, said on Monday the membership status of UK in European Union was becoming one of the most important topics in British domestic politics ahead of parliamentary elections in May next year.

He said: "The UK will not pay this bill and will refuse to make further contributions until all the numbers have been crunched."

"The fact that these numbers include the illegal economy – drugs and prostitution – and represent a massive swing, such that France and Germany get rebates as they are in recession, is just ludicrous," Skinner added............http://www.aa.com.tr/en/headline/411106--eu-budget-request-may-draw-uk-away-from-bloc
