Palestinian Unity Government Set for First Gaza Meeting

The new Palestinian unity government is due to hold its first Cabinet meeting in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

The session comes more than five months after the militant group Hamas reached an agreement with the Fatah party to jointly govern Gaza and the West Bank. Since 2007, Hamas had run Gaza, while Fatah governed in the West Bank.

The new government has not been operating in Gaza because of disputes between the two sides and the 50-day war with Israel. A cease-fire with Israel last month called for the unity government to take over governing in Gaza.
Palestinian leaders are also preparing to ask international donors for $4 billion to help rebuild Gaza at a conference Sunday in Cairo.
