The decision by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to expedite construction of 1,060 new settler housing units in east Jerusalem is "incompatible" with peace, the Obama administration warned on Monday, outlining "unequivocal" opposition to the move.
"If Israel wants to live in a peaceful society, they need to take steps that will reduce tensions," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a briefing with journalists. "Moving forward with this sort of action would be incompatible with the pursuit of peace."
Psaki said the US had not yet confirmed the approval, but that the administration was "certainly deeply concerned" by reports that Netanyahu had chosen to proceed.
"We're engaging at the highest levels from our embassy on the ground to get more information," she said.
The units would be constructed beyond the 1967 borders long seen as a framework for a two-state solution by the Palestinian Authority, Israeli officials said. Netanyahu also reportedly signed off on infrastructure projects in the West Bank, including road renovations.

"Some people tell us 'draw a map, outline a border with the Palestinian Authority and it will be okay.' Okay? Okay like it was when we left Gaza and Lebanon? What is the point of drawing a border if we don't know what country we will get on the other side?" the prime minister has been cited by the Jerusalem Post as saying.
He stressed, "I am not prepared to accept general statements about security. What will decide are not nice words on paper, but soldiers on the ground."
