MH17 debris removal starts in rebel-held east Ukraine

Workers began the removal of the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, at the same time as Russian President Vladimir Putin faced pressure from G20 leaders over the crash.

Dutch experts supervised a crew sent by the emergency ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic - run by the pro-Russian rebels accused of shooting down the plane - as they began dismantling the wreckage, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

The investigators heading the probe into July's disaster, in which 298 passengers and crew travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur died, said it could take "several days."

The investigation team said the collected wreckage would be transported to the Ukrainian government-controlled city of Kharkiv and then flown to the Netherlands, where a section of the doomed airliner would be reconstructed. A rebel official said they hoped to finish the operations in the next 10 days.

The crash was a thorn in the side of Russian President Vladimir Putin during Sunday's session of the G20 summit in Brisbane, as the US, Australia and Japan urged Russia to stop meddling in Ukraine and demanded justice for the victims of the crash.

Moscow and the separatists have strenuously denied they were behind the downing of the plane, instead pointing the finger of blame at Kiev.

Ukraine's President, Petro Poroshenko, issued a decree on Saturday ordering the withdrawal of all state services from rebel-held eastern regions; Putin said that the blockade was 'a big mistake' because it cuts off the disputed regions from the rest of the country.
