Second children coming

Over 800,000 couples applied to have a second child by the end of September, announced the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) on Thursday.

The new policy, allowing couples to have two children if either parent is the only child in his or her family, was officially implemented in most provinces from March onwards, Song Shuli, spokesperson of NHFPC, was quoted by the Xinhua News Agency as saying on Tuesday. During half of the year, the policy has been carried out smoothly and generally met expectations, Song said.

The next step will be monitoring and early warning for newborn population levels. Meanwhile, the government will study adjustments to the policy after tracking fertility levels.
