Eighteen people were arrested in Madrid, including the suspected head of the ring, a Spanish national of Lebanese origin, police said in a statement.
"The organisation mainly recruited Syrians who were displaced due to the situation in their country. In general it selected middle class families," the statement said.
- The ring charged between 6,000 euros and 10,000 euros ($7,500 and $12,500) per person, police said.
"In exchange for this money they had the right to plane tickets, accommodation in the various transit nations, falsified documents and several opportunities to attempt an entry in case they were detected before arriving in Spain," the statement added.
- The ring would usually take the Syrians to Asia and then a city in South America, most often in Brazil, before flying them to Madrid from where they travelled overland by bus or tax to France or Germany or another northern European country in a trip that could last weeks.
Police said they opened their investigation in April after detecting the "suspicious" entry of various Syrian nationals at Madrid's airport.
The suspects include eight Lebanese nationals, three Syrians, a Moroccan, Ecuadorian, a Ukrainian and four Spanish nationals, two of them of Lebanese origin.
- Nearly half of Syria's pre-war population of 23 million people has been forced to flee since the conflict in the country began in March 2011 as an uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Syrian refugees launch hunger strike outside Greek parliament ...
ReplyDeleteIn a bid for better living conditions, temporary working permits and medical care, up to 200 Syrians fleeing the war-torn country and seeking asylum in the EU, have begun a hunger strike in Athens’ main square.
Protesters began to gather on Syntagma Square last week, camping out and sleeping on cardboard boxes and in sleeping bags before staging the hunger strike on Monday, reports Reuters.
The demonstrators, many of who sat with masking tape covering their mouths, called for the Greek government find a way to solve the refugee crisis.
One refugee poster read: “We demand the Greek government finds a solution for Syrians in Greece.”
Currently, many of the refugees are living in detention centers that formerly housed army barracks. The facilities are reported to be overcrowded and allegedly pose health risks to residents. The financially strapped Greek government says it simply does not have the resources to deal with the growing refugee problem.
Athens prefect and member of the left-wing Syriza Party, Rena Douro promised that the government would do everything possible to work out a solution and said she was trying to secure arrangements for the refugees via discussions with the Church of Greece and police officials.

Spagna, arrestato un gruppo che trasportava migranti in Europa ...
ReplyDeleteLa polizia nazionale della Spagna ha bloccato un gruppo criminale internazionale che trasportava illegalmente cittadini di Siria e di Iraq in Spagna e in altri Paesi europei. Sono state arrestate 18 persone.
Secondo la polizia, per il trasporto di ogni singola persone i criminali chiedevano da 6 a 10 mila euro. In generale, i migranti arrivavano in Spagna attraverso i Paesi asiatici, Brasile, Perù, Venezuela e Colombia con documenti falsi.
