China urges US to "correct ways" after torture report

China urged the United States Wednesday to "correct its ways", after the U.S. Senate said in a report the CIA misled the White House and public about its torture of detainees and acted more brutally and pervasively than it acknowledged.

"China has consistently opposed torture. We believe that the U.S. side should reflect on this, correct its ways and earnestly respect and follow the rules of related international conventions," China foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily briefing.

  1. US Justice Department Refuses to Resume Torture Investigation...

The US Justice Department has refused to resume a torture inquiry and bring any criminal charges against CIA officers, responsible for tortures and brutal interrogations of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, according to CBS News.

The Justice Department rejected the prosecution of CIA officers on the ground that "the admissible evidence would not be sufficient to obtain and sustain convictions beyond a reasonable doubt." The decision, passed on Tuesday, led to renewed discussions about possible penal measures for those responsible for the use of inhumane practices against detainees of the notorious US prison.

"The true test of our nation's character comes now,'' said Elizabeth Goitein, co-director of the Brennan Center for Justice's Liberty and National Security Program, cited by USA Today. "Will we make excuses and try to defend the indefensible? Or will we finally acknowledge that our nation crossed a terrible line, and start talking about accountability?''..................http://sputniknews.com/us/20141210/1015691406.html

  2. China condemns US for torturing prisoners ...

China condemns any torture of prisoners and demands that the United States must obey international laws, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday, commenting on a report of the Congress about tortures of prisoners in the US Central Intelligence Agency’s black sites.

“We have paid attention to the report,” he said, adding China always condemned tortures.

The United States must revise and correct its approaches and obey international laws in full, the diplomat said.

Chinese media, including Xinhua, said that cruel methods used by the CIA when torturing prisoners without trial and investigation violated international laws on human rights and also values the United States tried to defend. The Chinese public has condemned the facts revealed in the report..................http://itar-tass.com/en/world/766178
