  1. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu signed a military cooperation deal with Iran on Tuesday that his Iranian counterpart touted as a joint response to US "interference."...

The deal provides for joint exercises and military training, as well as "cooperation in peacekeeping, maintaining regional and international security and stability, and fighting against separatism and extremism," the Iranian defense ministry website said.

Shoigu is the most senior Russian military official to visit Tehran since 2002, according to Iranian media, and the agreement comes with both countries facing Western sanctions.

Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan told state television that Iran and Russia had a "shared analysis of US global strategy, its interference in regional and international affairs and the need to cooperate in the struggle against the interference of foreign forces in the region."

    1. United States studying information on Russian defense minister's visit to Tehran...

The US administration is still “studying” information about Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu’s visit to Tehran. The US side warned in advance that the supplies of Russia’s S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran would be unacceptable.

The United States has seen the news about the meetings in Iran between Russian and Iranian government officials to discuss military cooperation and possible agreements. Now it is studying reports about these meetings, a US State Department official told TASS on condition of anonymity.

The US side had previously made it clear that it objects to any sale of the S-300 system to Iran, the official added. These objections are still in force.............http://itar-tass.com/en/world/772294

    2. Europe faces Greek headache whoever wins vote ...

Whoever wins Greece's general election on Sunday, Europe will have to take urgent action to tackle the country's mountain of debt before it buries the rest of the eurozone, analysts say.

Alexis Tsipras, head of the far-left Syriza party that leads in the polls, has alarmed EU capitals by pledging to ditch austerity measures and renegotiate the debt left by two huge international bailouts.

The risk of Greece crashing out of the euro is unlikely irrespective of the result, analysts say, as Athens and Brussels would probably strike a deal despite the fiery rhetoric on both sides.

But even if Tsipras loses, the European Union must deal with an unsustainable debt level that stands at 177.7 percent of Greece's economic output in order to restore confidence in the struggling eurozone, they say..........AFP........http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/120860.aspx

Mr Obama has also warned Congress that any move to impose new sanctions on Iran could scupper delicate negotiations aimed at reaching a complex nuclear deal.

"New sanctions passed by this Congress, at this moment in time, will all but guarantee that diplomacy fails ," Mr Obama said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was rushing home from the Middle East Wednesday (Jan 21) to take charge of Tokyo's response after militants threatened to kill two nationals unless he pays a US$200 million ransom.

  8. Mogherini Condemns Blocking Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine ...

The humanitarian aid not reaching the crisis-torn parts of Ukraine is shameful, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Monday during the event at Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

“Our [the EU] role is to try and support your [Kiev’s] efforts to reach the resolution to the conflict that is first of all in interest of people of Ukraine which is also the people of eastern Ukraine,” Mogherini stated adding that the efforts include both political and humanitarian levels, including ensuring that the humanitarian aid from Kiev gets to the conflict zones. “Which is something at the moment is not allowed, which is a shame.”

Mogherini’s comment comes as a response to Ukraine's ambassador to the US, Olexander Motssyk’s question whether the EU would designate Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics (DPR and LPR) as terrorist organizations.

Markets are counting on the European Central Bank to unveil a massive stimulus program on Thursday. It is the last arrow in the central bank's quiver - but will it be enough and have the same effect it's had in the US?

The European Central Bank is widely expected to launch a controversial new bond-buying program at its first policy meeting this year on Thursday, soothing investors but annoying critics who see it as tantamount to letting governments off the hook for racking up too much debt.

Known as quantitative easing, the stimulus tool is widely regarded as a last-ditch effort by the ECB to spur growth in the eurozone and raise inflation to a level just under 2 percent.

The central bank has been trying hard to encourage lending to companies by lowering its key interest rates to near zero, but those cuts have not had the intended effect.

"Bond purchases are the last tool at the ECB's disposal," said Marcel Fratzscher, who heads the Berlin-based German Institute for Economic Research. 35. Syriza 'to end Greece's humiliation' ...

The leader of Greek left-wing party Syriza says an end to "national humiliation" is near, as opinion polls put the party ahead three days before the general election.

Alexis Tsipras asked supporters for a clear mandate to enable him to end the country's austerity policies.

He repeated his promise to have half of Greece's international debt written off when the current bailout deal ends.

Greece has endured deep budget cuts tied to the massive bailout.

Sunday's election is being closely watched by financial markets which fear that a Syriza victory could lead Greece to default on its debt and exit from the euro.

"On Monday, national humiliation will be over. We will finish with orders from abroad," Mr Tsipras told thousands of cheering supporters at the party's final election rally in Athens.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the first group of about 100 U.S. troops to head to the Middle East in the next few days to establish training sites for Syrian opposition fighters battling Islamic State militants, the Pentagon said Friday.

Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said the troops, mostly special operations forces, were authorized last week and would begin arriving in countries outside Syria in the coming days, with a subsequent wave of several hundred military trainers following in the weeks thereafter.

The U.S. focus in the campaign against Islamic State has been mainly on Iraq, with the exception of a large number of air strikes to support Kurdish fighters trying to prevent the takeover of the Syrian town of Kobani near the Turkish border.

Kirby said on Friday that Kurdish forces now control about 70 percent of Kobani, which was seen a few months ago as being near collapse, with much of it in the hands of Islamic State.

Alexis Tsipras will Ministerpräsident werden.

Greece election: Radical Syriza party set for big poll victory...

Anti-austerity left-wing party Syriza is heading for a substantial victory in Greece's general election, official projections say.

The party is projected to win about 150 seats, just one short of an absolute majority, though officials say that number could change.

The ruling New Democracy party is projected to come a distant second.

Syriza's Alexis Tsipras has pledged to renegotiate Greece's debt arrangement with international creditors.

He has also vowed to reverse many of the austerity measures adopted by Greece since a series of bailouts began in 2010.

Reactions in Europe to the victory of anti-austerity party Syriza have suggested that Greece is on a "collision course" with the rest of the bloc. Eurozone finance ministers are to meet shortly.

Syriza party leader Alexis Tsipras promised to end what he called Greece's "five years of humiliation and pain" after his election win.

  91. A scourge of austerity policies who calls himself an "accidental economist" is set to become Greece's finance minister and the key negotiator with its creditors, barring last-minute hitches, senior Syriza party officials said on Monday...

In characteristically purple prose, Yanis Varoufakis, 53, celebrated the victory of Alexis Tsipras's far-left Syriza in Greek elections by paraphrasing Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

"Greek democracy today chose to stop going gently into the night. Greek democracy resolved to rage against the dying of the light," the bi-national Greek-Australian wrote on his blog.

Confirmation of his appointment is expected after Prime Minister Tsipras works out final details of his cabinet on Monday night but other potential candidates - including senior Syriza official Yannis Dragasakis, a founding member of the party - could still emerge................http://www.todayonline.com/world/accidental-economist-and-scourge-austerity-tipped-greek-finance-post

  94. Argentina to dissolve intelligence agency...

President announces plans over suspicions rogue agents were behind death of prosecutor probing tragic 1994 bombing.

Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez has announced plans to dissolve the country's intelligence agency amid suspicions that rogue agents were behind the murky death of a state prosecutor investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre that killed 85 people and wounded 200 others.

The death of Alberto Nisman this month, just before he was due to answer questions about his allegation that Fernandez conspired to derail his investigation, shone a spotlight on the powerful state spy apparatus which some analysts say operates with too much autonomy.

The government said that Nisman's allegations and demise were linked to a power struggle at the intelligence agency and agents who had recently been fired.

Fernandez said on Monday a draft bill on dissolving the intelligence agency "will be sent to congress before my trip to China this weekend"............http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2015/01/argentina-dissolve-intelligence-agency-150127020157268.html

  99. Ukrainian parliament’s recognition of Russia as "aggressor state" irresponsible — Karasin...

The Ukrainian parliament’s recognition of Russia as "aggressor state" is an irresponsible and thoughtless act, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and State Secretary Grigory Karasin told TASS on Tuesday.

"It is an absolutely irresponsible statement and a thoughtless act designed to impede advancement to the much needed compromise in Ukraine," the Russian diplomat stressed.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a statement on "Russian aggression in Ukraine." The document contains a call to the United Nations to exclude Russia from its ranks as well as to parliaments around the globe to render military and technological assistance to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) decreed to recognize Russia as "aggressor state" and asked the world community to recognize the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic to be terrorist organizations.

The President spoke today with Chancellor Merkel of Germany regarding developments in Ukraine. The two leaders expressed concern about the significant increase in violence in eastern Ukraine and Russia’s materiel support for the separatists and its failure to fulfill its commitment under the Minsk Agreement, and they agreed on the need to hold Russia accountable for its actions. They also agreed on the importance of finalizing a robust package of financial support for Ukraine to enable it to stabilize its economy as it continues to implement reforms that will lay the groundwork for a return to growth and prosperity.

  122. High tension in Golan Heights after deadly clashes...

Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia group exchanged fire with Israel in the disputed Golan Heights border area Wednesday in clashes that saw two soldiers and a UN peacekeeper killed and marked the most serious escalation in the region since the 2006 war.

The flare-up added to the regional chaos brought on by neighbouring Syria’s civil war. Hezbollah indicated the attack was in retaliation for a deadly Israeli strike on its fighters inside Syria earlier this month.

The violence sparked fears in both countries of yet another crippling war between the two foes. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Israel would respond “forcefully,” and the military fired artillery shell barrages that struck border villages in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah responded with rocket fire on Israeli military positions.

The Israeli military said five anti-tank missiles hit the soldiers as they were traveling near Mount Dov and Shebaa Farms, along a disputed tract of land where the borders of Israel, Lebanon and Syria meet.

The soldiers were in two unarmoured white vehicles without military insignia when they were struck from a distance of about three miles (five kilometres) away, according to Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman.............http://www.france24.com/en/20150129-tensions-golan-dead-clashes-israel-lebanon-hezbollah-un-peacekeeper/

The European Union would have to send a clear message if pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine staged a full-blown military offensive there, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Thursday after talks with EU counterparts.

"If there were large military offensives, for example with widespread assaults on (the port city of) Mariupol, a clear reaction would be needed," Steinmeier told reporters in Brussels.

Germany and EU partners have ruled out a military response to the conflict.

Earlier EU foreign ministers proposed that the bloc extend asset freezes and travel bans on individuals deemed responsible for hostilities in eastern Ukraine. REUTERS

Details emerging of the final moments of Flight QZ8501 are likely to focus attention partly on maintenance, procedures and training, though Indonesian officials have stressed publicly that it is too early to draw any firm conclusions...............http://www.todayonline.com/world/airasia-captain-left-seat-jet-lost-control-sources

  175. Spanish anti-austerity party stages rally after Syriza win...

Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets in Madrid on Saturday in support of a call for change from anti-austerity party Podemos, a week after Greece elected its ally Syriza.

The "March for Change" gets under way at noon (1100 GMT) at the Plaza de Cibeles in front of Madrid city hall and will snake its way through the streets to the Puerta del Sol square.

Protesters known as the Indignants filled that square for weeks in 2011 demanding political change at the height of Spain's economic crisis, and countless more protests followed.

Podemos was already planning the rally before Syriza's victory in Greece's snap vote but party leaders hope the Greek party's success will boost turnout at its first major march, which comes ahead of a year-end general election in Spain.

"We want a historic mobilisation. We want people to be able to tell their children and grandchildren: 'I was at the march on January 31 that launched a new era of political change in Spain'," Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said when he announced the march in early December.....................AFP.......http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/121810.aspx

  177. Tens of thousands of people have massed in central Madrid for a rally organised by radical Spanish leftists Podemos...

The "March for Change" is one of the party's first outdoor mass rallies, as it looks to build on the recent victory of its close allies Syriza in Greece.

Podemos has surged into the lead in recent opinion polls, and says it will seek to write off part of Spain's debt if it wins elections later this year.

Podemos says politicians should "serve the people, not private interests".

The BBC's Tom Burridge in Madrid says that there has been an impressive turnout and a carnival atmosphere at the rally.

Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias spelt out the party's message to the crowd.

"We want change," he said, quoted by the Associated Press. "I know that governing is difficult but those who have serious dreams can change things."

Protesters are parading in the same streets that over the past six years have seen many other gatherings against financial crisis cutbacks imposed by successive governments.

  179. Die griechische Revolution ...

Athen gegen Brüssel, Tsipras gegen Merkel, David gegen Goliath: Was nun in Griechenland passiert, könnte revolutionäre Züge annehmen.

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel “in due time,” a Cabinet member said, adding that Tsipras has a very busy schedule and plans to meet with the leaders of Italy and France first.

“Tsipras has a very busy schedule at the moment with the upcoming meetings with head of the Italian government Matteo Renzi, the President of France, Francois Hollande and the Greek parliament,” the Minister of State for Greece, Nikos Pappas, told the television channel Mega.
