French Lawmaker to Al-Manar: Assad Part of Syria Solution

French lawmaker Jacques Myard told al-Manar that President Bashar al-Assad is a part of the solution in Syria.

“International community should deal with President Assad as a part of the political solution in Syria,” the French MP told al-Manar as he arrived in Beirut on Wednesday.

Despite expectations that Assad will “politically die”, Assad remained in power, Myard said.
Paris has to know that the political and strategic situation in Syria has changed, he said, adding: “diplomatic relations cannot be only with states that we love. There are diplomatic necessities.”

Myard was a part of a French delegation that visited President Assad in Damascus Wednesday.

The delegation was headed by Senate member, Head of the Senate’s French-Syrian Friendship Committee Jean-Pierre Vial. It also included other two lawmakers.
For his part, President Assad stressed the importance of countering terrorism in the region, noting that maintaining stability in region is of Paris’ interest.

Fighting terrorism demands a real political will and a conviction that the outcome will be in the interest of all inasmuch as the dangers jeopardize the entire region, President Assad said.
“If this issue could be tackled based on that principle, surely we will have tangible positive results more quickly.”

French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls condemned on Thursday a group of French lawmakers for meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a day earlier in Damascus.

  4. Four days after French MPs went on an unofficial trip to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, much to the chagrin of President François Hollande, a bitter rift is growing among French politicians on how to deal with the Syrian leader...

Despite the vast gains made by the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq and Syria, the French government’s line has been and remains that under no circumstances will it cooperate with Assad in the battle against the Islamic militants.

But it is a policy that is being increasingly questioned by French MPs, even those within the ruling Socialists’ own party.

On Wednesday, the dissent turned into outright defiance as lawmakers Jacques Myard and Jean-Pierre Vial of the centre-right UMP, François Zocchetto of the centrist UDI and Socialist Gérard Bapt headed to Damascus where three of them held direct talks with Assad. Bapt says he was not part of the meeting.

The trip sparked an immediate rebuke from Hollande.

“I condemn this initiative,” he said. “I condemn it because French lawmakers have taken it upon themselves to meet with a dictator who is the cause of one of the worst civil wars of recent years.”

Prime Minister Manuel Valls, meanwhile, said that “for parliamentarians to go without warning to meet a butcher.... I think it was a moral failing”................http://www.france24.com/en/20150301-france-syria-cooperation-divided-assad-islamic-state/
