N. Korea Fires Rockets as Joint US-South Korean Maneuvers Start

Authorities say North Korea has fired two short-range missiles into the East Sea, in an apparent protest against joint U.S. and South Korean military exercises launched elsewhere in the region Monday.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency quotes officials as saying the missiles fell into the East Sea 490 kilometers from the North Korean port city of Nampo.

South Korea says its military "remains vigilant against any additional launches" as it maintains "the readiness posture."

North Korea has long demanded that Washington and Seoul stop the annual military drills, which Pyongyang has called "a dress rehearsal for a northward invasion."

Pyongyang routinely uses missile tests and artillery fire to protest the joint military maneuvers. It also has used such launches, as well as three nuclear tests in recent years, to defy international critics and push back against United Nations sanctions levied against the North for its ballistic missile launches.

  2. DPRK warns of 'toughest measures' against U.S.-ROK joint annual military drill...

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday warned of "toughest measures" to retaliate against military exercises jointly conducted by the United States and the Republic of Korea starting from March 2, saying the DPRK "will never remain a passive onlooker" to the drills.

The measures will include "all the ground, sea, underwater, air and cyber striking means," according to a statement issued by an unnamed spokesman for the General Staff of the Korean People's Army and released by the KCNA, the official news agency of DPRK.

"Key Resolve and Foal Eagle which will last till April 24 are dangerous nuclear war drills for invading the DPRK as they are aimed at swiftly hurling and forward-deploying the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces in contingency on the Korean Peninsula," said the statement. "Those drills are the most undisguised infringement upon the DPRK's sovereignty and dignity and a grave military provocation to it for which they can never excuse."

The Korean Peninsula situation "is again inching close to the brink of a war," it added.

The statement also stressed that Pyongyang will launch a cyber war against the United States and its allies if they attempt to bring down the DPRK through cyber attacks...............http://english.cntv.cn/2015/03/02/ARTI1425254081955758.shtml

  4. N. Korea Says Has Power to Deter US ‘Nuclear Threat’ ...

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong said on Tuesday that his country had the power to deter an “ever-increasing nuclear threat” by the United States with a preemptive strike if necessary.

His rare speech at the U.N.-backed Conference on Disarmament drew a rebuke from the U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood who urged Pyongyang to stop making threats and rid itself of nuclear weapons.

Ri said joint military exercises being staged by South Korea and the United States were “unprecedentedly provocative in nature and have an especially high possibility of sparking off a war.”

“The DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) cannot but bolster its nuclear deterrent capability to cope with the ever-increasing nuclear threat of the U.S. Now the DPRK has the power of deterring the U.S. and conducting a preemptive strike as well, if necessary,” Ri told the Geneva forum...........http://www.voanews.com/content/reu-north-korea-says-has-power-to-deter-us-nuclear-threat/2665832.html
