US evacuates troops from south Yemen base (Yemeni military source)

US military personnel stationed at Al-Anad airbase in southern Yemen have been evacuated over security concerns, a Yemeni military source said on Saturday amid fighting involving Al-Qaeda militants nearby.

The troops left late Friday for an "unknown destination", the military source at the Yemeni base in Lahj province told AFP.

Members of Yemen's anti-terror units, which are trained by US forces and based at Al-Anad, have also been evacuated, the source added.

At least 29 people were killed on Friday in clashes between Yemeni security forces and gunmen who included both Al-Qaeda members and separatists, in Lahj.

Yemen has acknowledged that American personnel gathering intelligence for drone strikes on Al-Qaeda are deployed at Al-Anad.

Yemen is a key US ally, allowing it to wage a long-standing drone war on its territory against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, considered by Washington to be the most dangerous affiliate of the global jihadist organisation.

  1. The United States is evacuating its remaining 100 special operations forces from Yemen, amid a deteriorating security situation in the country, CNN reported, citing sources in the region familiar with the matter...

CNN said the troops, who had conducted counterterrorism operations against Al-Qaeda and its affiliated militant groups, were the last U.S. forces stationed in Yemen.

The United States closed its embassy in Sanaa last month, after Houthi rebels took over the Yemeni capital.

On Friday, suicide bombers killed at least 137 worshippers and wounded hundreds more at two mosques in Sanaa, in coordinated attacks claimed by ISIS.

  2. U.N. warns against ‘protracted’ conflict in Yemen...

The U.N. special envoy for Yemen has warned an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council that events appear to be leading the Arab country “to the edge of civil war” and urged all parties to step back from the brink and resolve the conflict peacefully.

Jamal Benomar stressed repeatedly in a video briefing from Qatar that “peaceful dialogue is the only option we have.”

Benomar said “it would be an illusion” to think that Houthi Shiite rebels - who control the capital Sanaa, much of the north, and are moving further south backed by some members of Yemen’s armed forces - could succeed in taking control of the entire country. On Sunday, the Houthis seized Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city.

“It would be equally false,” Benomar said, to think that embattled President Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled earlier this month to the southern city of Aden - the country’s economic hub - could assemble sufficient forces “to liberate the country from the Houthis.”..............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/03/22/Houthis-seize-airport-in-key-Yemeni-town-of-Taez.html

  3. Yemen foreign minister calls for Gulf Arab military intervention...

Yemeni foreign minister Riyadh Yaseen called on Monday for Gulf Arab military intervention in Yemen to stop territorial advances by Houthi fighters opposed to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

"They're expanding in territory, occupying airports and cities, attacking Aden with planes, detaining whom they please, threatening and gathering their forces," he said in an interview with pan-Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera.

"We have expressed to the Gulf Cooperation Council, the United Nations as well as the international community that there should be a no-fly zone, and the use of military aircraft should be prevented at the airports controlled by the Houthis," he told the pan-Arab newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat.

  5. Yemen Houthi militia sweeps toward Aden in threat to president...

(Reuters) - Houthi forces in Yemen backed by allied army units seized a key air base on Wednesday and appeared poised to capture the southern port of Aden from defenders loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, local residents said.

The Houthis and their military allies later advanced to within 40km (25 miles) of the city, where Hadi has been holed up since fleeing the group's stronghold in the capital Sanaa last month.

Yemen's slide toward civil war has made the country a crucial front in mostly Sunni Saudi Arabia's rivalry with Iran, which Riyadh accuses of sowing sectarian strife through its support for the Houthis.

Sunni Arab monarchies around Yemen have condemned the Houthi takeover as a coup and have mooted a military intervention in favor of Hadi in recent days..................http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/25/us-yemen-security-idUSKBN0ML0YC20150325?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews
