Clashes in Istanbul (Constantinople) after police kill courthouse hostage-takers

Protesters clashed with Turkish police overnight in two Istanbul neighbourhoods after far-left militants who took a prosecutor hostage in a courthouse were killed by security forces in an attempted rescue mission.

The two members of the banned Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) took prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz hostage on Tuesday as an act of revenge over a teenager's death during anti-government protests in 2013.

Kiraz, who was also killed in the rescue attempt, was leading an investigation into the death last March of 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who died after nine months in a coma from a head wound sustained from a police gas canister.

Police used tear gas to break up protests in Okmeydani, Elvan's neighbourhood in central Istanbul, the Radikal newspaper said on its website.

In the working-class Istanbul district of Gazi, scene of frequent clashes and where the group has sympathisers, police used tear gas and water cannon to stop protesters from marching on a police station, it said.

Elvan died during protests that began as an effort to save a park from development before swelling into the biggest anti-government movement in a generation. President Tayyip Erdogan has described Elvan as a "terrorists' pawn."

The DHKP-C is a Marxist group formed in the late 1970s that has been behind a series of assassinations and suicide bombings, including fatal attacks on the U.S. Embassy. The Turkish police have been a frequent target too.

A website close to the group published a picture of the prosecutor with a gun to his head on Tuesday. Authorities tried to negotiate for Kiraz's release, but he was shot in the head and body and died of his wounds.

  • 2 armed people enter Turkey ruling party office in Istanbul (VIDEO)...

Police detained two armed assailants who entered an office of the ruling AK party in Istanbul. The incident took place just a day after a fatal hostage shootout involving a far-left party at a courthouse.

As was seen from the pictures and a video posted on social media one person broke the glass in two windows on the top floor of a seven-story building occupied by the AKP party and hung a banner resembling the Turkish flag outside.

It was not immediately clear how many people were inside the building. The two men ordered all those inside to leave. One of the armed assailants addressed the crowd gathered around the building from the window............http://rt.com/news/245861-armed-people-ruling-party/

    2. Emotional ceremony for slain prosecutor in Istanbul...

Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday in Istanbul’s main courthouse on Wednesday to pay tribute to the prosecutor who was killed by terrorists.

Members of justice, judges, prosecutors, lawyers as well as army officials and politicians and relatives of Mehmet Selim Kiraz, 46, attended the official ceremony at Caglayan Courthouse.

Kiraz was taken hostage by a Marxist-Leninist group on Tuesday midday at Caglayan Courthouse and was shot by his captors after hours of negotiations between Turkish police forces and the two hostage-takers. He died of his wounds at the hospital.

He had been overseeing the case of Berkin Elvan, 15, who was critically injured during 2013’s anti-government Gezi Park protests and died after almost nine months in a coma.

Tight security measures at the courthouse resulted in lines of tens of meters of people undeterred to enter the courthouse............http://www.aa.com.tr/en/headline/486707--istanbul-courthouse-hostage-situation-ends-prosecutor-seriously-injured

  5. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has signed the controversial domestic security bill into law, which grants more powers to the police and governors, despite objection from opposition parties....

The bill that regulates the authority of the police was renamed as the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) as "Legal Package To Protect Freedoms," as it triggered fist-fights in parliament during its debate in February.

Erdoğan approved the bill on April 3, after it passed the parliament floor with votes from the AKP, despite vows from all opposition parties to prevent it from becoming law.

The government says the police need more powers to preserve public order and the safety of citizens, particularly on the eve of elections scheduled for June. They claim that more peaceful protests turn violent with the increasing use of Molotov cocktails and are also concerned about the recent spread of bonzai, a synthetic drug.

All opposition parties, on the other hand, had argued that that the bill would give draconian powers to the police. Their criticism is focused on the claim that the government designed the bill to suppress free speech rights by justifying future crackdowns on secondary threats..............http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkeys-police-governors-granted-broad-powers.aspx?pageID=238&nID=80573&NewsCatID=509
