The quake struck Nepal and parts of northern India and was also felt in India, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
The quake struck 77km north west of Kathmandu, with reports of damage in the Nepali capital.
The quake caused buildings to collapse, injuring many and leaving a pall of dust over the city.
The death toll is expected to rise as Kathmandu's decrepit buildings, criss-crossed by narrow alleys, are home to large families.
A 1934 quake of magnitude 8.3 in the impoverished Himalayan nation killed over 8,500 people.
An historic tower built in the 19th century in Kathmandu collapsed, trapping at least 50 people, Nepal media reported.
The Dharara Tower, built in 1832, had been open to visitors for the last 10 years and had a viewing balcony on its eighth floor.
A Reuters reporter in Kathmandu said he had seen some buildings collapse and walls of several houses reduced to rubble.

Ein schweres Erdbeben im Himalaja hat Hunderte Todesopfer gefordert. Nach jüngsten Angaben des nepalesischen Heimatministeriums sind mindestens 688 Menschen ums Leben gekommen. Ein Sprecher sagte, es seien aus allen Regionen mit Ausnahme des äußersten Westens Opfer gemeldet worden. Mehr als 400 Menschen seien verletzt worden, sagte Innenministeriumssprecher Laxmi Dhakal am Samstag in Kathmandu. Er befürchte, die Zahl der Toten werde noch steigen.
Besonders in der Hauptstadt Kathmandu und der bei Touristen beliebten Stadt Pokhara würde es zahlreiche Opfer geben, sagte ein nepalesischer Diplomat in Neu-Delhi. Allein aus dem Kathmandu-Tal meldete das Innenministerium 114 Opfer.

Everest. It was the worst tremor to hit the poor South Asian nation in over 80 years.
At least 876 people were confirmed dead in Nepal, according to the police. Another 20 were killed in India, six in Tibet and two in Bangladesh. Two Chinese citizens died at the Nepal-China border. ReplyDelete....Un nouveau bilan publié par la police népalaise peu avant 13H00 GMT s'établissait à 876 morts dans le pays.
Plus de vingt de personnes seraient mortes en Inde et en Chine.
Le tremblement de terre a provoqué l'effondrement de la tour historique de Dharhara, l'une des attractions touristiques de la capitale népalaise, selon des témoins. Une dizaine de corps ont été extraits des ruines, selon un photographe de l'AFP.
Des neuf étages de cette tour blanche surmontée d'un minaret de bronze, datant du XIXe siècle, ne restaient quasiment que des décombres, selon les images télévisées. Des sauveteurs aidés par la population s'efforçaient de dégager les corps des gravats.
Des habitants pris de panique se sont rués dans la rue au moment du séisme qui s'est produit à l'heure du déjeuner, vers midi, et des bâtiments se sont effondrés à travers la ville.

ReplyDeleteFive people, including two children, were killed Saturday when buildings collapsed in different parts of the eastern Indian state of Bihar following a strong earthquake, whose epicenter is in Nepel, said police.
The two children of the same family died in a wall collapse in Bhagalpur. The three others were killed in Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Vaishali.
Tremors were felt in various cities of Bihar, with electricity and telephone services were affected across the state.
Massive tremors were felt across northern and eastern India after a strong quake of 7.7 degree on Richter scale hit Nepal.
