Ukraine’s Security Service detains 50 people allegedly plotting terrorist acts

Ukraine’s Security Service has detained about 50 people in the Black Sea port city of Odessa and the Odessa region, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Friday.

"About 50 criminals were detained in Odessa in the night. A lot of weapons, tens of kilograms of trotyl and explosive substances were seized," he said. In his words, these people "were plotting terrorist acts overnight from May 1 to 2."

Earlier of Friday, Ukraine’s Security Service service’s press secretary Elena Gitlyanskaya wrote on her Facebook account that the Security Service was continuing to mop up the so-called ‘terrorists’ and ‘diversionists’ in Odessa. "Law enforcers are detaining diversionists and their accomplices who had criminal intentions to spoil the Easter holidays in Odessa," she wrote. "The Ukrainian Security Service has already detained 40 people, ten of whom have been charged with establishing a terrorist organization."

"Searches continue. A big amount of weapons and explosive substances have has been seized," she added.
