U.S. responds to powerful earthquake in Nepal with disaster response teams, one million dollars (White House)

The United States is dispatching a disaster response team to Nepal along with an initial 1 million U.S. dollars in aid after a massive earthquake struck the Asian country and parts of its neighboring states, said the White House in a statement Saturday.

The U.S. "stands ready to assist the government and people of Nepal and the region further," said National Security Council Spokesperson Bernadette Meehan in the statement.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a U.S. government agency for administering civilian foreign aid, is preparing to send a disaster assistance response team and is activating another urban search and rescue team to accompany disaster experts and assist with assessments of the situation, according to a statement released by Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday.

More than 900 people were killed in the 8.1-magnitude earthquake, which jolted large parts of Nepal, as well as eastern India and Bangladesh, China's Tibet Autonomous Region, Saturday.

  1. California firefighters alerted for possible rescue mission in Nepal....

A team of California firefighters has been alerted and prepared Saturday for possible deployment to Nepal on rescue mission after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake killed over 1,400 people.

Though no order has been issued, "everybody is grabbing their gear," said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Brian Jordan. "It (the notification) just means to stand by."

Jordan said the California Task Force Two team is preparing for the possible deployment at the county fire's Urban Search and Rescue Headquarters in the San Fernando Valley.

The team has about 65 firefighters, mostly from Los Angeles County, with at least one rescue dog handler from Santa Barbara County, said a Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher.

"It takes several hours to get ready to get deployed," local media quoted the authority as saying.

A similar crew from Fairfax County, Virginia, has also been alerted to get ready to move, local media reported.

  2. Nepal Earthquake: EU mobilises all emergency response means...

The European Commission is making available €3 million in its immediate response to the vast devastation caused by the earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday. This comes in addition to the assistance from the Member States and the deployment of European Commission's humanitarian aid and civil protection experts to the crisis area.

"I have mobilised all our means for emergency response to help the survivors and authorities in the aftermath of this tragedy. What is needed most are medical teams and relief supplies. I call on all EU Member States to join the coordinated European response," said EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides.

The Commission's emergency aid will go towards the most urgent needs in the worst affected areas, including clean water, medicine, emergency shelter and telecommunications.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated. Through it, Member States, including Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Poland and Sweden immediately offered urgently needed search and rescue teams, water purification systems and technical assistance. Other Member States have also expressed their willingness to help. The European Commission can co-finance the transport of EU aid to Nepal.

  5. Frantic search for Nepal quake survivors as toll exceeds 2,000...

Rescuers in Nepal were searching Sunday for survivors of a 7.9-magnitude quake that killed more than 2,300 people, digging through rubble in the devastated capital Kathmandu and airlifting victims of an avalanche at an Everest base camp.

Terrified residents of Kathmandu were woken by fresh aftershocks in the worst disaster to hit the impoverished Himalayan nation in more than 80 years, with many forced to spend the night sleeping on the streets or on open ground in makeshift tents.

Hospitals were so stretched that medics had set up tents outside the buildings to treat patients.

The Kathmandu-based National Emergency Operation Centre put the death toll within Nepal at 2,352 on Sunday with another 6,239 injured.

"Tragically, more bodies are being pulled from collapsed buildings every hour," the Australian Red Cross said in a statement.

The 19th-century Dharahara tower, a major tourist attraction, was among the buildings that collapsed, with at least a dozen bodies taken away from the ruins of the nine-storey structure......france24.com
