US Ship Seized by Iranian Warships

TEHRAN (FNA)- A US cargo ship with 34 crew was stopped and seized by Iranian Navy warships on Tuesday.

Al-Arabia reported that the Iranian Navy has confiscated the American trade vessel with all its 34 crew for trespassing on Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.

An Iranian warship is now taking the American vessel to Iran’s Southern port city of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf.

There has been no official confirmation of the seizure yet.

  2. US Official Confirms Iran Intercepted Cargo Ship ...

A senior U.S. official says Iranian naval ships and patrol craft fired shots at a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz before escorting it into Iranian territorial waters.

The official said the container ship, the MV Maersk Tigris, was tansiting the strait into the Arabian Gulf "on an internationally recognized maritime route" at the time of the incident.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren says the container ship was in Iranian waters when it was approached.

"The [ship]master was contacted and directed to proceed further into Iranian territorial waters," Warren said. "He declined and one of the IRGCN craft fired shots across the bridge of the Maersk Tigris. The master complied with the Iranian demand and proceeded into Iranian waters in the vicinity of Larak Island."

Pentagon officials say a U.S. guided missile destroyer, the USS Farragut, is en route to the area. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command has also "directed aircraft to observe the interaction between the Maersk vessel and the IRGCN [Iranian] craft."

U.S. officials have been in touch with representatives of the shipping company, who say Iranian forces have boarded the vessel.

A senior administration official says the container ship did issue a distress call but that the call came after shots had been fired.

  4. Danish shipping company Maersk said on Wednesday the crew of the Maersk Tigris container ship were safe and "in good spirits" after Iranian authorities seized the ship in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day...

Maersk, the world's largest container shipping concern, said it was in dialogue with the Danish Foreign Ministry and seeking more information as it still did not know the reason for the seizure of the vessel.

Iranian patrol boats intercepted the cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz and fired warning shots, raising tensions in one of the world's busiest oil shipping lanes and spurring the United States to send military vessels to monitor the situation.

Maersk said the vessel was diverted in international waters. Iranian authorities quoted by official media said the Maersk Tigris was seized in Iranian territorial waters.

Iranian media cited an official as saying the seizure followed a court order ruling on a complaint about debts made by a private Iranian company.

"We are in ongoing contact with Rickmers Shipmanagement and are pleased to learn that the crew (are) safe and under the circumstances in good spirits," Maersk said in a statement......reuters.com
