Anti-Houthi coalition says got no reply on Yemen truce (Brig. Gen. Ahmed Asiri)

A Saudi Arabia-led coalition against Yemen's Shiite militant Houthi group said Saturday that it received no reply from the Houthis on a humanitarian truce (starting May 12) it proposed earlier.

"We have not heard anything positive on the truce yet," coalition spokesman Ahmed Asiri said at a press briefing in Saudi capital Riyadh.

On Friday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry unveiled a proposed five-day humanitarian truce in Yemen, noting that the truce could start as of Tuesday.

The truce makes it, however, necessary for the Houthis to abide by a cease-fire in all Yemeni provinces.

Fractious Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when the Houthis overran capital Sanaa, from which they sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country.

On March 25, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies began an extensive military campaign targeting Houthi positions across Yemen.

Riyadh says its air campaign comes in response to appeals by Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi for military intervention against the Houthis.

Hadi, who is backed by the Sunni-majority Gulf States, fled to Riyadh in March after Houthi forces attacked his residence in Yemen's southern port city of Aden.

The United Nations representative in Yemen has said that the Saudi-led coalition is bombing "effectively, trapped civilians".

Civilians in the northern city of Saada are struggling to flee Saudi-led coalition air strikes targeting Houthi rebels, reports and aid workers say.

The UN also warned that the indiscriminate bombing of populated areas is against international law.

Air strikes have killed at least 1,400, more than half civilians, the UN says.

  2. Houthis accept 5-day truce proposed by Saudi Arabia...

Iranian-allied Houthi fighters in Yemen accepted on May 10 a five-day humanitarian ceasefire proposed by adversary Saudi Arabia but warned they would respond to any violations.

Neighbouring Saudi Arabia had said on May 9 that the ceasefire could begin on May 12 if the Houthi militia agreed to the pause.

Supported by the United States, a Saudi-led coalition began air strikes against the Houthis and army units loyal to ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh on March 26 with the aim of restoring the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The Houthis say their campaign is aimed at fighting al Qaeda militants and to combat corruption.

"Any military violation of the ceasefire from al Qaeda and those who stand with it and support it and fund it will be responded to by the army and security and the popular committees," Colonel Sharaf Luqman, spokesperson for the Houthi-allied army, said in a statement published by Saba news agency.

  3. Yemen rebel allies accept Saudi ceasefire proposal...

Renegade Yemeni troops who helped Shiite rebels to seize much of the country said Sunday that they had accepted a Saudi proposal for a ceasefire after more than six weeks of air strikes.

The announcement came as Saudi-led warplanes hit the Sanaa residence of ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is accused of orchestrating the alliance between the renegade units and the rebels.

There was no immediate word from the Houthi rebels themselves on whether they too had accepted Saudi Arabia's offer of a five-day pause from Tuesday in the devastating air war it has led in support of exiled President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The truce moves came as the United Nations expressed mounting concern about the civilian death toll from the bombing campaign and the humanitarian impact of the air and sea blockade that Saudi Arabia and its allies have imposed on its impoverished neighbour......AFP....ahram.org.eg
