Ukraine to halt military-technical cooperation with Russia

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday that his government has decided to terminate an agreement with Russia on military-technical cooperation.

"The Cabinet is terminating the deal on military-technical cooperation with the Russian Federation signed in 1993," Yatsenyuk said at a government meeting.

The decision was taken because Russia currently "represents a threat to Ukraine's security and territorial integrity," Yatsenyuk said.

Under the 1993 deal, the two ex-Soviet states have jointly developed and produced military goods and provided each other with related services.

To officially terminate the deal, Ukraine will have to deliver a written notice to Russia.

Tension between Kiev and Moscow flared up in March 2014, after Russia took Ukraine's autonomous region of Crimea.

Relations between the two countries worsened further in the past months amid escalating conflicts in eastern Ukraine. Fighting between Ukraine's government forces and pro-independence rebels has killed over 6,000 people so far.

  2. Ukraine withdraws from 5 military accords with Russia...

The Ukrainian Parliament on Thursday voted to unilaterally scrap five agreements with Russia on military cooperation, the Parliament's press service said.

The lawmakers voted to withdraw from the agreement on cooperation in military intelligence and in mutual protection of classified information.

In addition, the parliament also backed Ukraine's withdrawal from the agreements that regulate military transportation between Ukraine and Russia and payments for those transportation.

The Ukrainian lawmakers have also approved a bill to cancel the intergovernmental agreement between Kiev and Moscow on military transit to Moldova.

Under the deal on military transit, Russian troops had the right to travel through the Ukrainian territory to the location of their peacekeeping mission in Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria.

Russia has not yet officially commented on the potential impact of Kiev's move on the bilateral relations.

Vladimir Komoedov, head of the defense committee in the Russian Parliament, told the Interfax news agency that Moscow hopes to find a compromise with Kiev over the deal on military transit to Moldova.
