Around 15,000 Syrians cross into Turkey within two weeks

Almost 15,000 Syrians civilians have crossed the border into Turkey’s southeastern Sanliurfa province over the last two weeks, official sources told Anadolu Agency Friday.

The fresh arrival of thousands of Syrians into Turkey comes amid ongoing airstrikes by the U.S.-led international coalition against Daesh in northeast Syria, the Turkish Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.

There is still another group of Syrians waiting along the border in Akcakale district in Sanliurfa, the Turkish emergency aid agency added.

Airstrikes were reported against Daesh positions in northeastern Syria, and especially in Al-Hasakah’s province’s Ras al-Ayn district; clashes between some Kurdish groups and the extremist group were also reported in the region.

Syria has been gripped by violence since the Bashar al-Assad regime launched a crackdown in response to anti-government protests in March 2011, triggering a civil war in which more than 211,000 people have died.
