Egypt police foil suicide attack against tourists in Luxor

Egyptian police foiled a suicide attack Wednesday near Karnak Tourist Temple in the Upper Egypt city of Luxor, security sources told Xinhua.

According to the sources, four terrorists with machine guns tried to break into the tourist site, but the police guarding the temple opened fire at them, killing two of the attackers.

The third terrorist who wore an explosive belt blew himself up, killing himself and injuring the fourth militant, the sources added.

The injured terrorist now is at hospital under tight security observation, the sources revealed.

A policeman and a local owner of gift shop were also injured in the attack.

• Other security sources told Xinhua that 6 people were killed in the attack, including 2 militants.

• No casualties were reported among the tourists, the source confirmed.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack, but it is more likely that the assault was carried out by the Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, which has recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State regional militant group.

Anti-government operations escalated notably in Egypt after the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013 after mass protests against his one-year rule.

Wednesday's attack is the first in Luxor since 1997 when Islamist militants shot dead 62 people.

As a famous tourist attraction, Luxor contains a lot of well-known ancient monuments and antiquities.

• L'attentat à Louxor porte un nouveau coup au tourisme égyptien...

Le terrorisme frappe à nouveau l'Égypte. Ce mercredi, un kamikaze s'est fait exploser près du temple de Karnak, un lieu hautement touristique, situé à Louxor, dans le sud du pays. Un deuxième assaillant a également été abattu par la police, et un troisième grièvement blessé à la tête, alors qu'ils tentaient de s'approcher d'un bus de touristes, rapporte le ministère de l'Intérieur. D'après l'agence de presse égyptienne, Mena, aucun étranger n'a été touché. 

Mais le pire a été évité de près: au moins cinq Égyptiens ont été blessés, dont un policier et un vendeur de souvenirs.

Selon plusieurs sources sécuritaires, les trois terroristes avaient préalablement tenté de forcer un barrage situé sur la route qui mène au célèbre temple de l'Égypte antique. Seul l'un d'eux est parvenu à pénétrer sur le parking, avant de faire détonner sa veste bourrée d'explosifs à environ 500 mètres du site archéologique. Selon la télévision CBC, les touristes qui se trouvaient dans le temple ont immédiatement été consignés par la police qui a sécurisé les lieux. 

Les ministères de l'Intérieur et des Antiquités rapportent également avoir pris des mesures d'urgence pour renforcer la sécurité aux alentours des lieux touristiques et historiques...........lefigaro.fr
