Turkey, Israel Hold Secret Talks to Normalize Ties (Haaretz Report)

Senior Israeli official on Monday met with Turkish counterparts to discuss the normalization of the ties between the two countries, the first such meeting after a year-long lull in the tentative contacts, Israeli report said on Monday.
“After over a year of deep freeze in Israeli-Turkish ties, talks about a reconciliation agreement between the two nations have resumed with a secret meeting between Foreign Minister director general Dore Gold and his Turkish counterpart, Feridun Sinirlioglu,” Israeli daily, Haaretz reported.

Gold left for Rome on Monday to meet Sinirlioglu, who heads a negotiating team in the Turkish government to resolve issues with Tel Aviv, according to a senior Israeli official, whose name was not mentioned in the report.

Gold made the trip without informing Israel’s National Security adviser Yossi Cohen, who has been responsible for talks between Israel and Turkey.

He also did not notify Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s special envoy to Turkey, Joseph Ciechanover.

Diplomatic ties between Turkey and Israel have deteriorated after a 2010 incident where Israeli commandos stormed the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara, the largest ship in an aid flotilla for the besieged Gaza Strip.

Nine Turks were killed in the raid and one more died in hospital this year after four years in a coma.

  1. Turkey Wednesday said it was holding talks with Israel over a deal to reconcile the two former allies following a deadly Israeli commando raid on a Turkish aid vessel bound for Gaza...

"It's quite normal for the two countries to talk for the normalization of the ties. How can reconciliation be achieved without holding any meetings?" Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara.

Cavusoglu's comments came a day after Israel's Haaretz daily reported that Israeli and Turkish officials had held secret talks in Rome Monday in a bid to restore relations between the two countries.

Cavusoglu confirmed such a contact had been made and said: "These meetings are not new. Expert-level talks have been held between the two countries for a while.".......dailystar.com.lb

  2. 'Normalization with Israel possible': Turkish President Erdogan...

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signaled a possible warming of ties with Israel, the Associated Press reported Monday, saying that the entire region has much to gain from normalized relations.

Relations between the two countries broke down in 2010 following an Israeli naval raid on the Gaza-bound Mavi Marmara flotilla which led to the deaths of nine Turkish citizens.

Speaking to journalists on a flight back from Turkmenistan, Erdogan said that "there is so much the region could gain from a normalization process," but that it would only happen if the two countries could reach a compensation deal for the raid on the Mavi Marmara.

"The region definitely needs this. I don't believe the Israeli public is pleased with the current state of relations. We need to consider the interests of the people of the region and introduce peace," he said.

"We had three (conditions); an apology — which happened; compensation — which did not happen, and the lifting of the embargo on Palestine," the Turkish Yeni Safak quoted Erdogan as saying, adding that only 'if the compensation issue and the lifting of the embargo are achieved then we can enter a process of normalization."................http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/middle-east/95595-151214-normalization-with-israel-possible-turkish-president-erdogan
