In a statement, released via his twitter account, Mr Varoufakis said he had been "made aware" that some members of the eurozone considered him unwelcome at meetings of finance ministers, "an idea the prime minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement".
"For this reason I am leaving the ministry of finance today."
He said he considers it his duty "to help Alexis Tsipras exploit, as he sees fit, the capital that the Greek people granted us through yesterday's referendum.
"And I shall wear the creditors' loathing with pride".
Mr Varoufakis added: "The superhuman effort to honour the brave people of Greece, and the famous OXI (NO) that they granted to democrats the world over, is just beginning."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande are to meet in Paris today to discuss the situation in Greece.
The European Central Bank is to hold a conference call to decide on funding for Greek banks which are rapidly running out of money.
Leaders of eurozone countries are to meet tomorrow to discuss the crisis.

ReplyDeleteGreek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis resigned Monday, saying he was told shortly after Greece's decisive referendum result that some other eurozone finance ministers and the country's other creditors would appreciate his not attending the ministers' meetings.
Varoufakis said Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had judged that his resignation "might help achieve a deal" and that he was leaving the finance ministry for that reason.

"Peu de temps après l'annonce des résultats du référendum, on m'a informé que certains membres de l'Eurogroupe souhaitaient mon 'absence' des négociations, une idée que le Premier ministre (Alexis Tsipras) a jugé potentiellement utile à l'obtention d'un accord. Pour cette raison, je quitte le ministère des Finances aujourd'hui", a-t-il expliqué sur son blog. ReplyDeleteDer griechische Finanzminister Yanis Varoufakis tritt zurück. Das teilte er am Montag nach dem Referendum mit, bei dem das griechische Volk die Sparauflagen der Gläubiger mit großer Mehrheit abgelehnt hatte.
Einige Mitglieder der Eurogruppe hätten ihm klar gemacht, dass sie es vorziehen würden, wenn er nicht mehr an ihren Treffen teilnehmen werde, erklärte Varoufakis am Montag auf seinem Internetblog. Sein Abschied sei von Ministerpräsident Alexis Tsipras als "potenziell hilfreich" betrachtet worden, weshalb er "heute" das Finanzministerium verlasse.
Dass Varoufakis unter seinen Kollegen auf EU-Ebene schlecht gelitten war, war ein offenes Geheimnis. Sein Rücktritt kommt dennoch überraschend, hatte der 54-Jährige diesen im Vorfeld des Referendums doch eigentlich für den Fall angekündigt, dass die Griechen mit "Ja" stimmen würden.
"Ich werde die Abscheu der Gläubiger mit Stolz tragen", schrieb Varoufakis weiter. Erst am Samstag hatte er in einem Interview den Geldgebern "Terrorismus" vorgeworfen und sie beschuldigt, auf ein Ja bei der Volksabstimmung zu drängen, um die Griechen "weiter demütigen" zu können...........kurier.at

ReplyDeleteGriechenlands Finanzminister Varoufakis tritt nach dem Referendum zurück. Das dürfte ihn selbst überrascht haben. Denn er soll Tsipras das Referendum eingeflüstert haben - gegen großen Widerstand. Für die Nachfolge machen zwei Namen die Runde.
Wenige Stunden nach dem Nein der Griechen zu den Sparvorgaben der internationalen Geldgeber hat der griechische Finanzminister Giannis Varoufakis seinen sofortigen Rücktritt angekündigt.
Kurze Zeit nach der Bekanntgabe der Ergebnisse der Volksabstimmung sei er aus Kreisen der Eurogruppe darauf hingewiesen worden, dass es eine „gewisse Präferenz“ gebe, dass er bei den Beratungen der Eurogruppe nicht mehr zugegen sei, schreibt Varoufakis am Montag in seinem Blog.
