250,000 migrants survived the Mediterranean to reach Europe in 2015 (IOM)

The International Organisation for Migration announced on Thursday that a total of 255,152 migrants had arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea in 2015.

According to an IOM infographic, Italy, Greece, Spain and Malta were the top four destinations in terms of migrant numbers.

Italy had the highest number of migrants among the four states, receiving 103,864 people.

According to the IOM, more than 2,300 migrants have died while attempting to reach Europe via the sea this year, while around 1,800 lost their lives in 2014.

The most common migrant-sending countries are Eritrea, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Albania, Pakistan, Iraq, Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau and Gambia.
