Medvedev visits Kuril Islands, will meet with youth forum participants

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev arrived on Saturday in the Kuril Islands as part of his working trip to the country’s Far East.

Medvedev is due to inspect the work of an airport on Iturup, one of the islands in the southern Kurils claimed by Tokyo. The facility was built under the federal target program for 2007-2015 aimed at developing the region. The regular flights there were launched in September 2014.

The prime minister will also visit a cultural and sports center currently under construction in the town of Kurilsk and the Reidovo fish processing plant, built in 2008, which has a capacity of up to 350 tonnes of finished product per day.

Medvedev is scheduled to meet with the participants of an all-Russia youth educational forum called "Iturup," held between August 12 and 24.

The event is attended by young scientists, teachers and documentary filmmakers whose interests are linked to the Far East’s development.

  1. Medvedev trip to disputed island criticized by Tokyo...

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited one of the Japanese-claimed islands off Hokkaido on Saturday in a trip that has drawn fire from Tokyo.

Following news reports that Medvedev planned to travel to the Russian-held island of Etorofu to attend a forum for young people living there, the government had appealed for the visit to be scrapped.

“Should he visit, it would be incompatible with Japan’s position and hurt national sentiment,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a news conference Friday before the Russian prime minister’s arrival. “We would never accept this.”

Suga, the top government spokesman, said Japan had conveyed its position to Moscow “at various levels” before Medvedev made the trip.

Speaking to reporters prior to the Russian’s leaders departure for the island, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said that if Medvedev visits Etorofu, “It would not be in line with the agreement between the leaders of the two countries to promote political dialogue in a calm environment.”..........Kyodo

  2. Medvedev inks order to increase Russia's shelf by 50,000 square kilometres...

Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed an order on the Russian borders, where the shelf is increased by 50,000 square metres.

"Anyway, we should not skip hydrocarbons," he told the Iturup youth forum. "I have signed an order, which fixes the border at the continental shelf of the Sea of Okhotsk."

The prime minister continued saying: "Exactly there are huge sources of raw materials, sources of energy. The document is important, as it was adopted after consultations with the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), it was agreed with our neighbours, with our Japanese counterparts."

"Thus, the area of our shelf becomes bigger by 50,000 square kilometres," he said.
