Russia invites Japan to cooperate in joint economic development of Kuril Islands

Russia invites Japan to cooperate in joint economic development of the Kuril Islands, Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Yuri Trutnev said on Friday in an interview with Japan’s NHK TV channel.

"If we put politics ahead of economy, there will be no good result. We need to exert efforts for the economic development that will benefit Russia’s and Japan’s people," Trutnev said.

"We want the Kuril Islands to live and develop. People and investments should come there for such purpose. An opportunity of land allocation there contributes to that," the deputy prime minister said in response to a question concerning free provision of a hectare of land in the Far East to any Russian citizens.
