Serbian Prime Minister Blames Germany, Greece for EU Migrant Crisis

German and Greek authorities are responsible for the EU migrant crisis, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said Monday.

The Serbian Prime Minister shared his thoughts with the German Handelsblatt newspaper in an interview:

"I am sure that if Germany offered less money [monthly payments] to migrants from the Western Balkans, the inflow [of refugees] would reduce significantly."

Vucic also condemned Greek local authorities' "unacceptable" reluctance to register refugees entering the European Union.

Europe is currently facing a major refugee crisis, as thousands of undocumented migrants, mostly from North Africa and the Middle East, attempt to escape their conflict-torn countries and find safety in the European Union.

Last week, the German Interior Ministry announced that the country expected to take in 800,000 asylum seekers and refugees by the end of the year, three times more migrants than in 2014.

Some Balkan countries, including Serbia, Kosovo, FYROM***, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Albania, were among the top-10 most common countries-of-origin of asylum seekers in Germany in 2014, comprising over 60,000 applications, according to Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

The United Nations Refugee Agency estimates that nearly 125,000 migrants have arrived in Greece’s Aegean Islands this year, a fourfold increase from 2014.

  1. Germany 'arson attack' destroys planned asylum shelter...

Police in Germany say a school sports hall intended as a temporary shelter for asylum seekers has burned down in a suspected arson attack.

Investigators believe the fire in Nauen, west of Berlin, was started deliberately. No-one was injured.

Far-right protesters have demonstrated against asylum seekers in the area.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier condemned violent protests at an asylum shelter in the eastern town of Heidenau, near Dresden, at the weekend.

Dozens of police officers were injured in the clashes.

Mrs Merkel has described the behaviour of far-right activists in Heidenau as "abhorrent" and "shameful" and said she would be visiting the town on Wednesday.

Correspondents say most Germans have been welcoming to asylum seekers, but a small minority has been vocal in its opposition............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34050393
