Afghan forces launch bid to retake Kunduz from Taliban

Afghan forces have begun an operation to retake the city of Kunduz, after suffering a major military reverse when it was seized by the Taliban on Monday.

Security forces have cleared the area around the central prison and the police headquarters, officials said.

The US said it carried out an air strike on the city early on Tuesday.

In one of their biggest assaults since 2001, the Taliban had forced Afghan troops and officials to retreat to the airport and freed hundreds from jail.

The attack on the northern city came as President Ashraf Ghani completed a year in office.

Kunduz is the first provincial capital seized by the Taliban since they lost power in the US-led invasion 14 years ago, and the Taliban's advance there will pile pressure on Mr Ghani's unity government.

It said it had deployed hundreds of fresh troops to help with the effort to retake the city on Tuesday.

"Serious fighting is going on," interior ministry official Matin Safraz told Reuters news agency.

"The Afghan security forces have been retaking most of the strategic parts of the city," he said..........http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34388463

  2. Germany says no rigid deadlines for troops' stay in Afghanistan...

Germany's defence minister signalled on Tuesday that she was open to delaying the withdrawal of German soldiers from Afghanistan beyond next year after the Taliban's surprise seizure of the northern city of Kunduz on Monday.

The fall of Kunduz, the first time the militants had taken a provincial capital in 14 years, has raised questions about how ready Afghan forces are to tackle the Islamist insurgency alone.

"It is important that we carefully examine the current situation and that we make a decision on the basis of the analysis and not according to rigid timelines but based on the current situation," Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen told reporters.

Although NATO has withdrawn almost all of its combat troops, it still has soldiers stationed there to train local forces. Up to about 850 German troops are in Afghanistan on this mission........Reuters........channelnewsasia.com

  4. Afghan forces struggle to retake Kunduz...

Heavy fighting is continuing in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, a day after government forces launched an attack to reclaim it from the Taliban.

Two US air strikes on Tuesday halted an attempt by insurgents to seize the airport, the army's stronghold.

Afghanistan's spy agency says the strikes killed the Taliban leader in the province and his deputy, but the Taliban have denied this.

The capture of Kunduz represents the militants' biggest victory since 2001.

Militant violence has increased across Afghanistan since the departure of most Western forces at the end of 2014.

On Tuesday the United States acknowledged the seizure of Kunduz as a setback, but said it remained confident that Afghan security forces could re-take the city.........BBC

  6. Afghan Officials Say Security Forces Retake Kunduz ...

Afghan forces recaptured much of the northern city of Kunduz from Taliban fighters early Thursday after what officials described as heavy fighting.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told VOA that Afghan forces launched an offensive overnight and that it was "very successful."

"During the operation, hundreds of Taliban were killed by the Afghan security forces," he said. "Right now we are focusing to help civilians in Kunduz city and at the same time to make sure that the Taliban are not able to again create security troubles there."

Residents in Kunduz also told reporters that Afghan security forces were in control of the city.

But the Taliban, which had seized Kunduz on Monday, insisted its fighters were still in control. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Afghan security forces briefly retook Kunduz but claimed they were beaten back and the city is again under Taliban control...........http://www.voanews.com/content/afghan-officials-say-security-forces-retake-kunduz/2986881.html
