Romania summons Hungarian ambassador on border fence plans

The Romanian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday summoned the Hungarian ambassador over Budapest's plan to build a border fence between the two countries, one of the latest attempts of Hungary to block rising influx of refugees.

According to a press release of the ministry, State Secretary George Ciamba summoned the Hungarian ambassador on behalf of Minister Bogdan Aurescu, reiterating the position of the Romanian part regarding the construction of a fence at the border of the two EU member countries, which "is not a correct attitude from the political point of view and it is contrary to the European spirit."

Moreover, the official said that as strategic partners, the Romanian side would have appreciated a previous joint analysis to assess the impact and the necessity of such a project, with a view of eventual bilaterally-agreed measures.

He mentioned that from the Romanian side's viewpoint, currently no real situation is recorded to confirm the migration pressure invoked by the Hungarian authorities in the area where the fence is to be built, and therefore it is incomprehensible the hurry the Hungarian side is carrying out this project.
