West launches anti-Russian information campaign amid Ukrainian crisis (General Staff)

Western countries have launched an information campaign against Russia amid the Ukrainian crisis. However, the true causes of this crisis are hushed up, Chief of the Military Academy of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Sergey Makarov said on Thursday.

"Currently, Western countries have launched a large-scale information campaign against Russia under the pretext of protecting Ukraine from the "Russian aggression", Makarov told an international conference on Afghanistan held in the academy.

On the other hand, there are attempts to hide from the world public the true reasons for the emergence and development of the Ukrainian crisis, facts of unleashing the war with the use of the armed forces against the civilian population in the southeast of the country are hushed up, "which contributes to increasing the conflict potential and reduces the prospects for the peaceful resolution of the conflict."

"An important aspect of information campaigns conducted by the United States and NATO is disregard for the evidential base to substantiate the legitimacy of the ongoing military operations," Makarov said. 

He cited Syria as an example, where "the Americans are demonizing the government Bashar al-Assad presenting him as a dictator."
