Erdoğan slams claims Turkey buying ISIL oil, says Russia’s economic threats ’emotional’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dismissed claims that Turkey buys oil from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), in what appears to be a veiled response to Russian accusations leveled in the wake of the downing of a Russian jet by Turkish warplanes.

Erdoğan said those who accuse Turkey of buying oil from ISIL are "liars," insisting that Turkey buys oil and gas only from known sources and that those who make such claims need to prove it.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev alleged on Wednesday that Turkish officials were benefiting from ISIL oil sales, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said it was no secret that "terrorists" use Turkish territory.

"Shame on you. It's clear where Turkey buys its oil and gas ... Those who claim we are buying oil from Daesh like this must prove their claims. Nobody can slander this country. I would call them liars [if they do]," Erdoğan said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIL. "If you are seeking the source of weaponry and financial power of Daesh, the first place to look is the Assad regime and countries that act with it," he said in a speech to village heads at the presidential palace.

Russian President Vladimir Putin harshly responded to Turkey's downing of the plane, calling it a "stab in the back" by "accomplices of terrorists" and vowing that there will be "serious consequences."

Stepping up his criticism, Putin also accused political leaders of Turkey of encouraging the "Islamization" of Turkish society, calling it a "much deeper problem" that the downing of the Russian plane.

Erdoğan responded to Putin on Thursday, saying the 99 percent of the Turks are already Muslims.

Erdoğan also said that statements from Russia warning of cancelation of projects in response to the downing of the plance were "emotional" and unfitting of politicians....
