Syrian army recaptures key supply route to Aleppo city

Syrian army on Wednesday recaptured their only supply road to the northern city of Aleppo, state run SANA news agency reported.

The Syrian forces retook control of the key road connecting Aleppo and towns of Salamiyeh, Aathrayya, and Khanaser after battles with IS militants, who recently attacked Khanser to cut the government forces' only supply route to Aleppo.

SANA said the army inflicted hefty losses on the IS in recent battles to retake the road.

In mid-October, Syrian forces unleashed a large-scale offensive in the southern countryside of Aleppo, after starting a broad offensive in Homs province in central Syria.

The Aleppo campaign was launched from three directions, namely the towns of Khan Toman, Jabal Azan and al-Wdaihi.

The military has recaptured the Tank Battalion and many villages south of Aleppo, with help from Russian-Syrian joint airstrikes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said intense battles are still raging in southern Aleppo.

The UK-based watchdog group said the battles are taking place around 12 km south of Aleppo city, which is carved out between Syrian forces in the west and rebels in the east.

The aim of the military campaign in Aleppo was to secure the international road to the city and to break the IS-imposed siege on the Koerse airbase in southern Aleppo.
